Anyone know of any reason why the EW-82 hood (from 16-35 f/4) won't work on the 17-40 or EF-S 10-22?
Thanks!

The outside diameter might not be the same for all lens and the latching mechanism could also be different and the length of the hood will be different due of the angle of view of the lens. They must provide maximum shade for different angle and lens which none is the same.

The number in the hood moniker is the diameter in mm. So the EW-82 is 82mm in diameter. The hood for the 17-40 and 10-22 is the EW-83E. It's 83mm in diameter. So it will be loose as ah goose and fall off.

The 17-40/4L and 10-22 both take the EW-83E hood, which is 1mm larger in diameter than the EW-82 hood. Also, the EW-82 has a different hood shape with petals closer to the glass, as you can see in the image below.

Didn't know this about the numbers - I kinda figured the diameter went along with the filter thread size. I've used the 24-105 hood (83H) on the 17-40 on crop frame (and even on the 10-22 with a little filing) and the ef-s 17-55 hood (83J) on the 24-105 on crop. So all 83s. As for angle of view, seems like a lot of Canon's hoods are "cautious" - could be a little closer. 83E seems almost useless.

Thanks!

Nah, the EW-83E makes a great mini frisbee!

The diameter (82, 83, etc.) is of the hood bayonet mount in mm.
Certainly it has been popular for years to use a deeper hood on a crop body.
The UWA hoods are rather useless for blocking light, though of some value in protecting the front of the lenses.

Once I compared a lot of these EW-83* hoods on the site. EW-83J looks like a nice deeper alternative (FWIW there's no EW-83I). I have the 83K hood that came with the 24/1.4 L II and it's odd because the larger petals are rounded and I can't put the lens down resting on the hood.
