p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Frozen in time

A few from 2 weeks ago in the Tremont section of the Great Smoky Mountains NP. It was around 19 degrees that day and a few parts of the river were frozen all the way across. The waterfall in the 3rd picture was nearly frozen solid with only a small amount of water still flowing through. Needless to say this is east Tennessee and 2 days later it was 60 degrees and melted.

Indeed some extraordinary pictures. You have captured the feel of the frozen waterscape so well.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I really enjoy shooting black & white in the winter time since it lends itself so well to processing. It is especially difficult with frozen waterfalls as the scene tends to wash out and not show much detail and depth until seen in black & white.

Bill,

Which waterfall is in #3? I think I know which one. Very nice.

It's Spruce Flats Falls which is about a mile from the Tremont Institute.

I thought so. Isn't that something of a precarious hike in the wintertime?

Very well done. Reminds me of some time I have spent in Vermont.

wow...that is one unique image of Spruce Flats, I don't think I have ever seen it that way...very nice.

What were roads like in that area after the snow...I had hoped to go up there for that snow event just couldn't make it...but want to if it snows again...

Thanks Travis, I was just up there in November during the drought and there wasn't much flow at that time so to see it frozen solid like that was amazing.

The roads had been plowed and were pretty much clear but the park service still had all of them closed. I had to park right outside the entrance near the wye and walk in an extra 1 1/2 miles just to get to the trailhead.

Are you referring to the Y in the road at the Townsend entrance?

Yes, the NPS has gates at the road they close during bad weather. There were several photographers that went in Friday night before they closed and stayed in the Cades Cover campground and then had the entire cove to themselves on Saturday after the snow.

Are you referring to the Y in the road at the Townsend entrance?

Cool, thanks. That tells me I need to make sure I come in from Townsend. Much appreciated.
