Many of you know my frustrations associated with my love-hate relationship with the 7D2. I recently decided to stop the madness, and I purchased a used 1DIV (for $850!), a body I owned but regrettably sold when I bought my 7D2 2 years ago. As I will soon be out of work as we move from LA > SF for my wife's job, I decided that putting down $3500 for the 5D4 wasn't the best idea. I also had to be honest with myself in the amount of photography I'll be doing moving forward. I'm a 60/hr week commuting/working stiff now, and I don't do that much shooting here in the urban nightmare that is LA. That may change when we move north, but the situation is still sufficiently unclear that I didn't want a ton on money locked into a body that I might only use once a week and in less than ideal urban shooting conditions.
I could not be happier with the decision that I made. I just put the 400 DO II on and boom, tack sharp photos are everywhere, with 1.4x III and 2x III included. Yeah the AF with the 2x is slow, but the combo is fine for anything other that fast flying birds. 1.4x work beautifully under all conditions, as expected. No microadjust has been needed. I just slapped things together and it worked perfectly. This is in stark contrast to the 7D2, a body with which I constantly fought to obtain desirable results. When I got those results, they were great, but I paid a steep price in missed and soft shots shots to get those good ones.
Anwyay, we've had a ton of rain in SoCal this year, so it took 3 weeks since body's purchase for me to get a weekend with sun, no people, and cooperative birds. Here are the results!
