p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Recommend a lens for me

Relatively new user here. Just picked up a 5d mark iii after years of shooting on a crop sensor (50d). Got the camera bug and now looking to upgrade on some glass as well.

I have quite a few lens that are not compatible with the new body I would be using such as the Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. I used this lens quite a lot while traveling.

I love my bokeh and shoot mainly lifestyle photography. I like to explore and walk around downtown, shoot landscape/architecture. I also shoot portraits sometimes (I believe the 70-200 covers this part).

I currently have only the 50mm f1.8 and 70-200 f2.8 II IS that would be compatible with the new body.

If you've liked your EF-S 10-22, the EF 16-35L f/4 IS is the natural choice.

16-35 & 70-200 is a doable combo that I've used for travel myself. Although I bring along the 70-200 f/4 IS that is much lighter.

I'd look at the 16-35 f/4L IS on which there are lots of good deals lately to replace the 10-22. I used to have the 10-22 and it was a lot of fun.

What else are you looking to cover? Budget?

Can you direct me to where the good deals on the 16-35 f/4 are?

No real budget, under $2k preferably.

Another lens that would fit the OP's lineup well is the Tamron 15-30.
But the 16-35/4 is the default choice these days. Besides, a 16-35/50/70-200 setup is a classic one.

no zooms - something in the range of 90 mm that is fast

it will force some restrictions on you for the intended use in the OP - restrictions can often revivify your approach if not your art

For architecture on a full frame I like the 28mm focal length. The 28mm 2.8 IS would be a good lens to consider (or if you prefer, the 24mm 2.8 IS).

The Canon 16-35 f/4L IS sounds perfect for your needs. Sharp as a tack, resistant to flare, with a solid IS function. Quite affordable when compared to the new 16-35 f/2.8L III.

I find this lens useful for architecture, landscapes, wandering around, general assignment photography, even environmental portraits when used with care. I'm an editorial photographer and I shoot probably 90% of my assignments with the 16-35 f/4L IS and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II.

$2k is a healthy budget, that get's you a few lenses:

$1k gets you a 16-35 f4 IS (or 17-40 f4 if looking for a cheaper option) as a replacement for the 10-22
That still leaves you with $1k either for a 135 f2 as a lighter option for the 70-200, or a standard zoom; either 24-70 f4 or 24-105 f4

How much ultra wide do you shoot? While the 16-35 IS is certainly a good option, combining a 24-70 f4.0 IS with you 70-200 would give you seamless coverage.

I rented the 24-70 last summer to take to Europe. I also took my 17-40, 70-200 and 135mm f2.0. Most of my photos were taken with the 24-70, a lot more than with the 17-40. I was so pleased with the lens that I bought it instead of returning it.

Lot's of suggestions for the 16-35 f/4. Sounds like its definitely a favorite.

I do love to shoot pretty wide and don't really need the seamless coverage because I have been shooting with the prime for a while. Why would you prefer the 24-70 over the 16-35? I believe the 24-70 does not have IS as well.

Direct from Canon -- Refurb at a great price:

https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/ef-16-35mm-f4l-is-usm-refurbished

No worries whatsoever with refurb -- buy with confidence (and full warranty).

There also was a recent group buy that I was able to get in on but it appears to have ended:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1469582

Frankly, I'd get the refurb now while in stock for such a good price and not look back.

Good luck!

Based on what you said (like 10-22 and bokeh) you want fast (f2.8) and what you are missing. The lens that come to mind under $2000 are:
- Tamron 15-30 f2.8 is great -
https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/01/third-party-ultra-wide-lenses-mtf-comparison/
- The old 24-70 f2.8 v2 really good for close in work and under $2000. Not superb but 24-70 and f2.8. I have it and for people walk about under $2000 - its great
- the old 24-105 f4 is - everyone poo poos it but IS/F4 24-105 - it is great for handheld and inexpensive
https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2016/11/canon-24-105-f4-is-mk-ii-mtf-results/

You have gaps from 17-70mm. This requires 2 lens.

Used 17-40 /f4 and used 24-70/f2.8v1 could be had for under $2000 and fill both your gaps.
17-40 is not stellar but good for handheld. Ditto for 24-70. Better than 10-22 on cropper, at least. 17-40 can do wide and at f8>20mm it is pretty good.

A 35mm f1.4 Art.

Do you have a macro lens?

You can shoot a lot with just a 35mm and a 100mm macro.

Throw a clean used 17-40 f4L in your bag for UWA tripod work.

I have both the 16-35mm f/4L IS and the 24-70mm f/4L IS. The 24-70mm is on my camera most of the time. When I'm traveling and only want to bring two lenses, I bring the 24-70mm and the 100-400 II and call it a day. Serves me well.

This suggests either a 16–35mm f/2.8 or a fast 35mm to go with your 70–200mm lens. The 16–35mm f/4 IS has the advantages over an f/2.8 Mk III of cost and a common filter size with your tele zoom. I would include the Canon 35mm f/2 IS in the "fast" category as well as the usual f/1.4 suspects.

I have the 24–70mm f/4 IS, which I take hiking for its lightness and flexibility. But on my photowalks around my city I usually either a 35mm or 16–16mm and either a 100mm macro or a 70–200mm.

One possible course is to get both the 35mm f/2 IS and the 16–35mm f/4 IS instead of a single more expensive f/2.8 zoom.

Don't forget to budget for a flash.

35L II and 24 IS

or

16-35 IS and 35 IS depending on how much you want to shell out and preference on prime vs zoom. Honestly all these lenses are great and it really depends on your FL preferences.
