p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · need help troubleshooting a 70-200 L IS mk II

Hey guys,
My 70-200 has just begun to "catch" when I manually focus. It feels like there is a detent in the focus ring and the motion isn't smooth, almost feels dirty. Is this something to worry about or just something annoying? The auto-focus seems to be unaffected.
Thanks for any advice
J.R.

Hi J.R.,

Hard to say for sure. It could be an early sign of worse USM issues to come, or it could be a grain or two of fine sand or something gritty that got in between the focus ring and lens barrel. You should be able to tell if it's grit, because it'll sound a bit crunchy/scratchy. It might get better on its own, and it might not. In any case, it wouldn't hurt to send it in for a cleaning, and ask them to check this particular issue.

Thanks! I think I will send it in. There is a pretty heavy clicking in sound and the focus ring stops pretty heavy in certain places.
