p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · newborn wild foal

This is my first image upload on the site. I'm pretty much a beginner/hobbyist level with a dslr camera, about a year into it. These are feral horses on Kodiak island and the foal is two days old in this photo. Any comments and critiques are appreciated, good or bad.

I would start by cropping it - the background isn't doing much for me, but the horses are really interesting.
Then I would see about sharpening the foal some.

Welcome to the forum!
First impression and overall feel is that I like it!

It looks like you nailed your exposure and focus which are the most critical as you already know. That is not an easy task with white furry critters.

If you have lots of pixels left I would crop this much tighter. Maybe down to the top of the bushes just behind them and half the distance off each side to bring them in closer. This would remove the distracting dark tree from the background as well.

I would comment on a possible color issue that I think I see but I will leave that for others to comment on who have much better skills at this than I do. Heck, I could be completely wrong so if no one comments on it then ignore me on this.

Again, welcome to the forum! Hope to see more from you soon! You started off with a nice one!

Dave

Thank you both for the suggestions. I know my post processing isn't up to par yet but I'm learning more every time. I'll try a tighter crop and see if I can draw the eyes more on the subject.

Welcome to the Forum.

I took a stab at a crop and some tweaks. I suspect you've got enough pixels to work with for this much crop, but I did uprez this (small jpg) to work on it, then downrez it partway again (for a small uprez overall). I may have exaggerated things a bit, but hopefully you get the gist.

Again, welcome to FM.

Welcome to the forum. You already have some good advice and I like Kent's crop.

Welcome, shortdraw!

+1 @ tighter crop.

I chose to take it in the landscape orientation personally.

This is the crop I wanted at first glance, and the exposure is right on. Nice capture.
