p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Why no Metabones EF to X-mount adapter?

My buddy and fellow FM member recently got a A7RII and got himself one of those smart adapters that let you use Canon EF lenses with full functionality. I started looking into it and it seems all the adapters for EF to X-mount are "dumb" adapters - the best I found serve as a speedbooster type thing, but still with no electronic contacts and no ability to control aperture, AF or power IS. Why is that? Is there any news of one being made?

My first thought (which occurred long ago) is that third-parties are afraid of potential lawsuits. On second thought, this doesn't stand up well, when you consider that Canon hasn't sued Metabones. The only new wrinkle in the Canon lens to Fujifilm camera smart-adapter saga is Fujifilm. Maybe Fujifilm uses some form of gear-recognition that prohibits the use of third-party gizmos that pretend to be a Fujifilm lens.

The problem with that is that there are various Canon to other mounts Metabones, and there are other mounts to Fuji X Metabones. Just not Canon to Fuji X.

Maybe there's hope.

Maybe there hasn't been enough demand (yet) for someone to reverse-engineer Fuji's signal protocols... all the existing X-mount adapters are "dumb" adapters.

My guess is that it's too small a market to justify the development expense.

For now.

There was a post on fujirumors site about a prototype smart Contax adapter (Fringer's). I know it's not the same but many posted that the Contax is similar to Canon EF lenses in that they are a full electronic lens mount. So perhaps it shouldn't be too hard to create one for the EF mount once most of the work had been done on the Contax adapter.

I do hope EF, Leica M and Contax G adapters are under development for the X system. I'll be waiting in line.

Probably the linkage is not as easy to "hack" as it was between the Canon EF and the Minolta A / α mount. And I am saying hack because even through four generations of Metabones adapters, the adaptation is far from perfect.

And of course the Fuji X mount hasn't been around since the 80s, as both the Minolta α and Canon EF are to be reverse engineered.

For starters I would be happy even with a few cheap 3rd party offerings from Sigma/Tamron.

Uh, the Metabones adapter has nothing to do with the Minolta A mount (SLR), it's for the E (mirrorless) mount.

Maybe the X mount protocol is really not as easy to crack. Ever noticed that there are third party smart lenses for the E, MFT and even Canon M mount but not the Fuji X? (short of the Zeiss Touit that are nigh on being considered official by Fuji, to the point of being listed in their roadmaps and receiving digital in-camera correction for vignetting and distortion). Pretty much every other adapter listed on the Metabones site is for the old "dumb" mounts that have no electronic connections. The Nikon F adapter is presumably "dumb" as well.
