Hey guys , I love the rendering of the 58mm from what I see. Having the 105mm 1.4 and 200mm f2 I was just wondering how much distortion you get when doing a tight-ish headshot with the 58? Is it usable for that ?

Shooting straight on (nose to nose) I don't typically see
any 'distortion' 'til I get below 28mm if they're kept close
to the center of the frame. 58 shouldn't be a problem.

Usable yes, but I'd prefer the options you already have. The 58 shines at environmental portraits IMHO, but I've also done nice close-up shots with it.

Thanks! I guess what I'm asking is, I love the Dof of 85 @ 1.4 when the hair is blowing , it's soft from the eyes out.
The 105 isn't soft from the eyes out, it's almost like a straight plane of blur compared to 85mm if that makes sense.
Is the fall off from the 58 really gradual on close up portraits?

I don't worry about the distortion. I worry about focus. good focus at the minimum focus distance is HARD for me.

If you google Mansurovs & 58mm 1.4, he has a fairly good sampling of portraits taken with the 58mm 1.4G. I think it is a great portrait lens and I've never noticed distortion. My 24mm 1.4G, yes, very noticeable, but not with my 58.

Here are some rather close up portraits I shot with the 58mm

with a more close up cut out

(mirrored, turned B/W, and with added grain)

In my experience/opinion no issues with distortion for close ups/the kind of close ups I shoot, much better then a normal 50mm in that regard

Also no problems getting with focusing, even when using it at close up

The facial distortion (compression) has much to do with the distance to subject as well. A shot taken 5' away with a 58mm will be the same as a shot taken with a 28mm and cropped to the same framing (except for some of the less tangible rendering stuff)

I do feel it will depend a lot on the facial features and shape. The beauty of the 58mm is that is not a 50mm so taking closer portraits works really well. The rendering and focus fall off will be more dramatic as you are close, particularly at f/1.4. Of course you can vary this by stopping down. Another characteristic of the 58/1.4 is you have focus shift as you stop down to f/2.8, back focus, so you have to fine tune the AF both at f/1.4 and f/2.8 to make sure you are covered.

I feel that a 85mm 1.8g lens is a better option.
58mm 1.4g is not sharp in short distance.

I feel the 58/1.4 is sharp at f/1.4, but the contrast is lower which is desirable for portraits. I suspect the main issue is getting an accurate fine tune for the AF at f/1.4 and f/2.8. My 58/1.4 had been twice to Nikon, so the fine tune calibration is less than +20 correction both on my D750 and D810. Previously it was sitting at +20, now +14. My discussion with the Nikon techs is that there is quite a high fine tune correction with this lens for AF.

You feel a 85mm is a better option for someone with a 105?... yeah no. The 58mm 1.4g is sharp, but not bitingly sharp... the 58 gives you the compression of an 85 with a noticeably wider frame.

If he told us he didn't have anything for portraits and asked for a budget lens I'd be all over the 85mm 1.8g recommendation... but not for someone with a 105mm 1.4 & 200mm f2.

Here is a shot from the office about 1/2 hour ago. No cropping, just back focus ON, AF-C Auto Area just using face/eye detection at f/1.4 for both shots. Minor changes at near distances will of course change the perspective.

I also have the 85/1.4 and 105/1.4 and each has its signature and look

No distortion at close distance with the 58mm. Mine is quite sharp close in even wide open. The only "problem" is the close working distance with your model. I prefer a bit more separation from the subject with the 85mm.

58G is my favorite lens ever. I have TONS of closeup shots with it, especially during the getting ready part of the wedding.
However, when I get really close, I close the lens down to f/2.0 due to such shallow depth of field at close distances.

Close distance with the 58mm turns messy in my opinion, I always try to keep away from the minimum focusing distance on this lens.
