Every year we spend Christmas in the Smoky Mountains and while there I decided to take some quick pics of my boys.

Gabriel getting ready to go hiking

Michael ready for the hiking trails

Looking for salamanders in a creek

Not all is hiking in the Smokys

Great captures! Particularly like #4.

Glad to see you didn't cancel your trip because of the Gatlinburg and Chimney Tops wildfires in November. Lots of rebuilding to do, but still plenty to see and do in the area.

We love that area, we have been going for many years.
The photos of them on the rocks was actually taken at the Chimney Tops picnic area. I wanted my kids
to see how a person's dumb actions can affect the lives of many. The saw the burnt cabins, homes and parts of
the forest that was scorched.
I used the trip as part of a lesson.

best wishes,
Michael

I thought that looked like the picnic area. I'm glad you took the opportunity to speak to your children about the events.

No recent news about the 2 juveniles responsible for this senseless tragedy. If tried as adults, they could spend the rest of their lives in jail.

The community response has been overwhelming. Everyone is working hard to get the area back on track and big names such as Dolly Parton have gone above and beyond expectations.

They actually met one of the many people that lost their home. The gentleman is a cook at one of the restaurants we had dinner at. I had my sons give him some money as a present from our family to his. The help that has poured into that area has truly been great. It is great to see a community come together. I hope my kids learned a lesson from this trip, how the careless act of two teenagers can negatively affect the lives of many folks.

Can you tell us your settings and camera/lens on the first two photos? If there is EXIF data I am too computer illiterate to find it or figure it out.

These are awesome exposures of your boys! Thanks for sharing and also for taking them on the life lesson trip!

Awesome outdoor portraits. My only thought is it might be nice to uses larger depth of field to lend location context. The viewer would have no idea the first few are taken in the Smokys. Would love to see the river a little sharper in 4 too. Generally it is nice to have some environment in the same focus plane if you go super shallow. Lisa Holloway does this very well. Check out her "2016 in Review" for examples.
