New here and looking to add a fuji x system to my canon system for a small good kit. Do you guys think this lens redundant with a 23?

I feel the 18 f2 excels at being discreet and portable with very good image quality. If you don't need discretion or portability, I'd look elsewhere for increased image quality.

That said, with the price of used 18 f2's, not sure why everybody doesn't have one in their camera bag.

Its my most used lens. Def. a keeper. Optically not the best and would be great to have a 1.4 version if not too much larger, but very fun focal length and size to use.

Darn it. This thread is causing my G.A.S. problem to flare up again!

More seriously, nice pics from those who submitted them, and, yes you guys have me thinking of the 18, despite me having that focal length covered by other lenses.

I had been (and still am) thinking of getting the 16mm f/1.4 as my evening walkabout lens. But it is expensive, big and heavy. The 18 is none of those, though I lose a stop. --Decisions!

The XF 18mm f2 is one of my favourites in the Fuji system. I'm not sure where its reputation of not being sharp comes from (probably a lot of it comes from people that have never used it and are just repeating what they read somewhere on the 'net...).

A couple of years ago I did a walk-around comparison with my Nikon AF-S 28mm f1.8G, and the comparison wasn't even close - the Fujinon absolutely smoked the Nikon. That's when I started selling off all of my Nikon gear...

Bought both the 27mm and the 18mm for the convenience of having a lighter and smaller kit when I need or want to. Was mostly interested on the 27mm since I'm not much a wide-angle photographer, but surprisingly I'm using the 18mm a lot.

Still didn't pixel peep the photos, but they are nice trought the EVF

The 18mm is an excellent lens. Great for walk around. Great for journalism. Smalls & stealth. It was my first Fuji lens and I still use it regularly.

I absolutely love my 18mm.
That with a Rokinon 12mm F2 and an adapted Canon FD 50mm 1.4 are a cheap fun trilogy.

Love the Voigtlander LH-28 ood on the 18mm too.

I don't think you can dismiss the sharpness criticisms as hearsay-- considering quite a number of us in this very thread have said it was both our most used lens and our least sharp/lowest IQ on the Fuji X system. I know that was my experience.

I think a few things are going on here: The lens resolves quite a bit in the central parts of the image. And it works well at portrait distances. It definitely gives quite a bit up in the periphery and at infinity. It was easy outclassed from a pure image quality perspective by my Rokinon 12mm, Fuji 35mm f/1.4, and Fuji 60mm, particularly in the edges and at infinity when resolving fine detail. I also suspect copy variation plays a role; I had a friend who said his 18mm was just as sharp as his 35mm f/1.4.

It just turns out that IQ isn't the end-all for many applications.

Lens like the 60mm are exceptionally sharp however, not just for Fuji, but for any system.

Fuji glass as a whole is across the board all pretty darn good. There are relative weaker and sharper lenses, but compared to what ?

Is the shortest guy on an NBA basketball team, who is lets say 6 foot 5 inches tall really that short compared to general society ? Not hardly, its just that his team mates are 6 foot 9, 6 foot 11, 7 foot 1 etc.

Here's a couple I've posted in the X mount image thread before processed with C1. Here I've fed them through IXT and imported the dng to C1(and LR) and I found the result a lot more detailed. I use this lens often and like it very much because it's so compact, useful and gets nice pics It's the only lens I have that when mounted I can comfortably fit my XP2 or XE1 into my coat pocket and take it about with me (maybe the 35/1.4 but it's a bit tight/bulging).

Great, great lens. Such a sleeper. You can get it for peanuts, and makes a GREAT lens for what OP described- a great, wide street lens...
Could it be better for landscapes? Sure, but for what it is, the size of the lens, and price you can pick it up for, it is a no-brainer...
