Anybody use the sigma 24-105 on a d750 ? Looking for a general purpose lens that has good image quality and isn't too expensive so thought this might fit the bill
Normally I shoot wildlife and birds but fancy trying a different range of subjects including landscapes , looked at the Nikon 24-70 2.8 as well but I think I would have to try and get a second hand version as it's a bit more expensive.

I use the Sigma on D800e, so it's bound to be good on the lower rez D750.

I am using Sigma on D750, great lens, a bit sharper than Nikon 24-120 (and a better contrast)

I have one permanently attached to a D600 (same sensor as D750)
for a throw in the truck 'walk-around'. It's amazing for brewpubs to
grandkids, and everything in between.

Exactly my thoughts. I had both and thought the Sigma was sharper so I sold the Nikon 24-120.

So I decided to post here instead of start a new thread. I have had my D750 for about 2 months now and I love it. I got the D750 w/24-120 kit because the sale they had going was too good to pass up. I am now wondering if I would be better served with the sigma 24-105 art? I absolutely love the range of the 24-120 as I came from canon with the 24-105 f/4 L canon lens. I don't think I would miss the 15mm on the long end. The main reason I am thinking about it is to get better optical quality.

So my question is for those of you that have used both lenses do you think there is a really big difference in optical quality between the two.

I generally shoot mostly outdoors while on hikes with the dogs, landscape, walking around cities, family parties and events, etc. So it is used as an all around lens. I have been pretty happy with the 24-120 but find it to be a little soft in areas and the Sigma is supposed to be sharper.

I did take a trip to B&H before I made the purchase and took a few test shots with each lens and compared them and found the sigma was sharper. But also found that with a little bit of PP the Nikon results came out to be very similar.

I know no one can answer this completely for me as it will ultimately be up to me but just curious to hear opinions on if you had both lenses and which one you ended up keeping and why.

have never used the Nikon but I can certainly vouch for the Sigma, very sharp and any focus issues can be mapped out by using the dock.

Plus the dock allows for individual adjustments throughout the zoom range.

And ... what you get when you do the same PP to Sigma image as well?

Seriously, I tested three copies of Nikkor 24-120 within a year or so, trying to find an above average copy, and my Sigma 24-105 turned out sharper, with much better build quality, and all that for less $$$.

I have owned both and tested them side by side and for the copies I had the Sigma was sharper so I sold the Nikon. You mentioned going for hikes with the camera and a general walk around lens/camera and I would think this would be pretty bulky and heavy for that type of shooting. For those things I found my mirrorless and the Canon G7x II to be perfect.

I have been shooting with the N24-120/4 since it came out. I have been more then happy with it in the work it needs to perform.

I don't mind the bulk or weight when hiking. They are mostly day hikes and I prefer an SLR to a mirrorless camera. I use a blackrapid strap so I can barely tell the camera is there anyway. I am just trying to get the best optical quality that I can. I just am not sure if it is going to be enough of a difference to justify switching from the Nikon to the Sigma?

For me there was a difference but I will say it's not a huge difference.

I bought one. I returned one. The intended purpose was as a casual walk around lens when I wanted to go with a single lens so it needed to be merely good - better than Nikon's kit lenses and by a smidge it was. In other words, I wasn't expecting or asking for much. Using the Sgma dock I was able to get it to the point that it was nearly as sharp as my 16-35 at 24 and 35mm. Still quite a ways off of a 50mm prime and the results from 70-200 VR II used in similar ranges. OK but nothing to write home about. Usable. That was on my D500.

Put the lens on my D800 and it was so far out of whack that no inbody lens adjustments even came close to making it useable. We're talking needing like a +50 adjustment.

So my assessment... pretty lens, well built, good enough for a single body user, perhaps a bit better than the Nikon 24-105 (which is a pretty crappy lens on an 800 series body).
