Sunset at Key West, Florida. Which orientation is better? Horizontal or vertical? TIA.

I prefer the second image as it gives the boat more room

I would go with the second and then consider cropping down to eliminate the the burned out sky.

For me, #1 works better.

Not sure why. Maybe because it appeared on the screen first and it grabbed my attention. Or, in slight disagreement with Ben, that the sun and the boat don't need more room and that #1 is thus more "succinct".

I could see #1 as an inspirational poster.

And it motivates me to re-evaluate a picture I took recently where I did leave it oriented in landscape.

Depends on what you want to convey.

Portrait = formal / power (I'd consider an increase to the contrast on the sailboat @ more silhouette)
Landscape = relaxed

I might also look to render the white sun with a warm tint / (near) matching yellow, so the bright white doesn't command quite as strong of a draw. Could go either way @ better / not better.

For what it's worth, I like #1. It just seems more succinct than #2, giving a neater, tighter, more intense version of the message. And the comp, with the boat in lower right, gives the boat room to move. In a nutshell, #1 seems like it has less wasted space.

Just my $.02.

On image #1 there are three dots (birds?) off the bow that do not add and actually distract from the image. I took a very similar shot in Key West last year.
