Hello everyone I have been a member here for a couple of years mostly browsing. Very soon I intend to purchase a very nice camera thinking d800 d3s or d4 but I'm curious about how safe it is to purchase here and what precautions should I take before taking the plunge. I see lots of great comments about most sellers but I figured I should be extra thorough!! Thanks and please pardon my ignorance.

just do your "do diligence" and you should be fine. Never EVER use paypal gift, regardless of who you are buying from. I DON'T OFFER IT when selling, and never will. I would rather eat the 3% than get hosed.

also, read feedback from people. Sometimes people will have 10 positive feedback (all 100%), but see what they have bought. could have done 10 transactions buying cable releases, and then all of a sudden selling a 10K lens (just an example). if something is to good to be true, probably is.

I have been here a while selling and buying, and haven't been burned yet. but again i don't buy and sell that much, thus i only have like 50 feedback after 12 years

Hello and welcome, lurker.

First, I'll turn your question around and ask how safe would it be for someone here to sell you a camera? What I'm getting at is that you have just one post, so folks here really don't "know" anything about you. It would probably be a good idea for you to participate more frequently so you become a more recognizable member.

Now let's go the other way. If you are interested in buying from someone here, look at their feedback. That will give you a pretty good idea of their trustworthiness. For the most part it's pretty safe to buy from here "if" you do your homework, check feedback, and ask intelligent questions. With high $ items, directly ask the seller for more info, such as presence on other sites, real name & address, phone #, etc.

Hope this helps, and look forward to seeing you post more on the boards.

Feedback and longevity on FM count --- but there's more to check.

As noted, no Paypal Gift ever.

Beware unsolicited PM's to sell a similar item " Hi, I saw that you are looking for a D4 --- I'm selling mine and ...

Clarify the ownership and condition: I bought this two years ago is not the same as I bought this from B&H two years ago ...

If it's a larger purchases I call and talk with the Seller: you'll gain insight into both the item and the individual. Every call I've made I met a great seller and ended with a purchase.

Before you send payment PM what you've discussed: "Just to recap that's a new in box ***, $xxxx including insured shipping with a three day inspection and return period. Did I miss anything? If I got it all right let me know and I'll send $"

Participate in FM feedback ---

All the Best

I look for a Flickr account or Smugmug icon as part of my DD. You get to know whether the seller is an actual photographer or a re-seller. Nothing wrong with re-sellers but, I like buying from an actual user. Just my opinion.
