Congratulations to kwilliam8 for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 15 votes - View Previous Winners

Last Friday afternoon was cold, but beautiful, here in the Pacific North West. I went to nearby Leque Island for Short-eared Owls and Northern Harrier Hawks, and was treated to nice activity and great light. That afternoon was a blast for me (sometimes it all comes together). The following images were taken with a Nikon D5 camera and the Nikkor 800mm f/5.6 lens. I hope you enjoy some of my images from that day!

Here are a couple more, for folks that like to see a broader view:

The mountain in the first image is Whitehorse Mountain, and the mountain in the second image is Mount Baker. This is a really beautiful area!

Keith, these are freaking fantastic!

There is so much good here, I don't know where to start. Of course the duos are outstanding but honestly each of the others shows your subjects in great poses, eye clearly visible and you did a phenomenal job capturing their agility and flight behavior!

Really awesome set; thanks for posting.

Morris, thanks! The first image shows the rear owl gaining on the owl in front. I don't think the owl in front knew that another owl was coming up behind it. The second image shows the reaction of the front owl, after having been grabbed (talon to talon) by the rear owl. There is another, intermediate, image (not shown here) of the contact between the two owls, although that image is a bit confusing (and blurry due to the speed of the interaction). There were about a dozen owls flying around and interacting, although much of the interactions happened at a greater distance.

Kim, thanks so much for the kinds words! I am really happy with these images. In fact, there were a bunch of really good images, and it was hard picking a smaller subset to show here. Thanks again!
