Hi gang. Haven't posted in a while. Life has been a roller coaster for me this year, much more so and to far greater extremes that ever before. I did get a chance to getaway for 5 days to Haines, Alaska, the week before Thanksgiving to photograph Bald Eagles on the Chilkat River. Unlike the other poster who posted photos from Haines, we had horrible sunny conditions. I would have loved to get some snow and would REALLY have loved some overcast. BE's are not the easiest birds to expose properly in direct sunlight! So a number of these made good use of my mad PS skillz
In any event, all critiques, good & bad (and yes - some wings are clipped) are welcome. EXIF is intact as always. If the "watermark" is printed in white, it came straight out of Lightroom. Otherwise, it went through PS as well. All images are sized to fit HD resolution (1920x1080)
Enjoy!

5. The scenery along the Chilkat River is breathtaking. The BEs made it better

6. Did I mention the scenery there was beautiful? Since you are up every day well before sunrise, you get to enjoy the Alpenglow at first sunlight on the mountains. The 500mm made it so I didn't have to climb for this shot .

7. We had a cute visitor that we encountered walking along the shore area. An inquisitive Ermine.

8. There were lots of fights over fish. Usually the BEs would attack one another. This time they were playing tug-o-war with the fish.

9. Comin' right at ya! This is full-frame width on the 1DX, just cropped top/bottom to fill HD resolution.

10 -13. This is a sequence of a Juvenile Bald Eagle flying in to snag a salmon near the shore. The eagles don't really fish this time of year. They just wait for the exhausted, post-spawn salmon to get close to shore, and then simply drag them onto the bank.

14. I thought about using PS to increase the distance between the eagle and the moon for a better composition, but decided against it. This is what I shot.

15-18. Another series. This time of a Juvi attacking an adult. The surprise is who won this battle. I was probably too close for some of this, and some wings got clipped - often just a tiny bit. So rather than cheat and edit in something from another frame as a friend suggested, I decided to go with it instead and ended up cropping those in even closer. Some may object, but I think they turned out OK.

20. I almost really like this photo. The problem for me is that the Juvi's eye is so very hard to see - even after some judicious post work. So I had some fun with this image and Topaz Glow in the next one posted.

23. When we got back to Juneau, we took some time to go visit the Mendenhall Glacier. Alas, it was snowing pretty heavily. But it started to die out as we were leaving, and this beautiful eagle landed right near the parking lot. I couldn't resist the pretty perch.
