If the rumors come true and the new D760 is a full frame equivalent of the D500, will you buy it instead? Wouldn't it mean you can have the same fast AF-C tracking in a full frame body? If so, wouldn't that be the ultimate BIF camera? What do you guys think?

Why dump the long reach of the D500? Sure buy the D760 to keep the D500 company for those closer subjects just like those who have the D5/D500 combo.
Also the AF points only fill APS-C sensors, with full frame you often wish they spread like APS-C.
D500 will probably remain the ultimate BIF camera.

It depends on the price. The "760" beginning a FF, I'm sure it will cost a few hundred more. For those that are on the edge of their max budget already with the 500, I doubt they will upgrade.

I love almost everything about my two year old D750. The buffer is probably the thing that aggravates me the most. But those images, man!

So I waited for an upgrade at Photokina and instead we got served poo-poo-360. Oh man, what to do, what to do??

Figured that the Dx (and free grip) would serve me well for soccer down the road; I picked that up to sooth my need for speed. And even if Nikon does make my dream FF camera (no guarantee) then I would still enjoy Dx for sports. A dual camera set-up, say 70-200 or 200-500 on the crop with a sweet 14-24 on the Fx would make the the ultimate dad with a camera(s) on the side line

Actually, though, your question brought to mind whether I would now be enticed by a so-called "FF D500" or "Mini-D5"? It would have to be really special

A full frame equivalent of the D500 is a D5. They already share AF systems (and associated dedicated processing), Expeed processing, metering systems, megapixel count, buffer depth, etc. Physical size, sensor size, and 2 FPS is primarily what separates them apart from cost.

I think if you see a smaller FF body that is close to the D5 spec it will be marketed as a variant of the D8XX body and likely top out around 8 FPS, but here's hoping for more.

I will dump my D810 for that, not my D500.

The speed is essential for us AF junkies, but D500 secret sauce is AF-pt spread. Only DX has that ability until Nikon moves PDAF to the sensor—and maybe not even then. The only (additional) FX I need is the D5X...with cutting-edge ISO 50.

But it's happened once before with the D700 when Nikon wanted to break into the prosumer FX market and with the camera industry in the doldrums I think it can happen again.

Desperate times at Nikon and the market is totally different than the D3 days. Honestly think D810 successor as well as D750 and D610 upgrades are in greater need and would generate far more sales than the unicorn D700 successor that everyone continues to wish for.

Nikon would be hard pressed to do three bodies and a rumored Df2 for the 100th anniversary.

My prediction is entry FX that blends d610 and d750 features, D810 high megapixels follow-on and a DF2. That is a lot for FX in a year already!

...and look what it did to D3 sales. Lesson learned perhaps?! Maybe not.

It cannibalized some D3 sales but also gave them huge camera revenue they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Not to mention additional system revenue from lenses and flashes.

I think as long as they stagger the announcements enough (like the D700 & D3) and maintain a significant FPS advantage on the D5 (the D700 was still 1 FPS slower than a D3 even with the grip), it can work out OK without cannibalizing too many D5 sales. It will always take away some sales. They will probably maintain more of a FPS difference than they did with the D3/D700 though. The hardcore sports/action pros will still be using D5's. The D850h (or whatever) would be picked up by enthusiasts and wedding shooters for the most part I would think. The other solution is to not use the D5 sensor, protecting the D5 as the high ISO king, and putting a 24-30MP in the 'D850h'. That way if you need the absolute best ISO performance you're still looking at a D5.

I've got to believe after the first 6 months or so after announcement, the majority of people who wanted/needed a D5 got one, and Nikon can be a little less worried about subsequent bodies taking those low volume, ultra high margin sales away. Who knows though, my guess is as good as any.

I wouldn't give up a D500 for a D760. They are meant for different purposes. Maybe I'll sell my old D700 and buy one of those D760's off one of you guys, used, for a screamin' deal!

If the D760 lives up to the Nikon 100 year hype, then it'll likely not enter the used market for a long, long time. How many clicks you got left in that D700

Hell no. I may buy and play with a D760 but I'll NEVER dump my D500 no way no how.

I think the other consideration is how many customers they can entice to move from Canon or other systems with a baby D5. The D700 caused many to move to Nikon.

A 600mm on a crop is too short most of the time unless shooting cardinals on a bird feeder 20 feet away. How is a FF going to improve upon that reality?

I was mainly referring to the fact a FF Nikon would have the same AF tracking characteristics.
As far as the crop factor goes, if you have a FF you would be able to do crops from it wouldn't you?
