Would 5dsR with 100-400mm II be long enough for wildlife (birds/whales)? I have a 500mm II, but I heard it's not safe to left gear in the trunk , walking around with both lens would be too much for a vacation, so I'm inclined to leave 500mm at home. Any thoughts ?

On the Big Island I would be comfortable with the 100-400, afaik the birding isn't exceptional but there are great landscapes (volcanoes, lava fields, rolling hills, etc.) there as well as ranch lands and beautiful tropical areas. I haven't gone on whale trips so I can't advise on that though.

i was on the big island for 9 days in October (wasn't enough time, obviously), and my longest lens was an 80-200 2.8. I found it wasn't long enough for wave shots, but it wasn't "wave season" - which now it is.

the 100-400 should be good, especially for the lava
