How often do you see the humming birds?

Thanks Kim. I am quite blessed that I have hummers almost year round. I get the Ruby Throats from April through September /October. From December to February/March I get some migrating Rufous . Last year in the winter I had 2 Buff Bellied Hummingbirds. I had never seen one before or since.

There are 2 Rufous this year . I see them daily. They are getting use to me being in the garden now so I can get fairly close to them. They will come and land 10 feet from where I am sitting on occasions.

Great shot! Love the lighting on the bird. I would tone down the exposure by about 3/4 stop to accentuate the lighting on the bird.

Thanks Bobby. I will definitely give your suggestion a try.

A few more shots from the Big Island. The yellow-billed cardinal is a bird species in the tanager family. It was formerly placed in the Emberizidae ? and is not very closely related to the cardinals proper.

Thanks Birdie, and Happy New Year to you!

Both shots are lovely. The 2nd shot may look a little busy at first glance but itís not too distracting as itís quite soft and the colors compliment the hummer colors well.

Here are a couple shots from the previous week when I rented the system before buying. It is my resident female Costa that has the run of the roost and is the only hummer I get at home. She is relentless and I could not get the male as she chases them all away. Hoping my neighbor hangs a feeder for some distraction. The third is a Vermillion Flycatcher that was cropped about 2/3 of FF. I ended up purchasing the system as it really fit my needs. I could have processed a little better but I also signed up for the CC and my workflow changed a bit. So these are pencil whipped so to speak. More images to come. Really love this system!!

Thanks so much K-H. Belated Happy New Year. I'm still struggling with the auto focus on hummers when they are moving quickly.

It seems like everyone is doing well with the EM1.2.
Good work!
I made a New Years resolution to get closer to the birds (too many shots required too much cropping).
Any hints or suggestions are welcome.

Assuming you can't or don't want to use blinds/feeder set ups, then some basic fieldcraft tips to get started would include:

1. Find locations near water/food source where birds frequent.
2. Don't approach in a straight line (zig zag, meander towards birds). Approach slowly, stopping at regular intervals and watching for the birds' reaction to you. Try moving when they're not looking directly at you.
3. Stay low and quiet.
4. Avoid sudden, quick movement and let them become acclimated to your presence.
5. Don't stare at them (that's what predators do).
6.. Keep camera to eye as much as possible.

Avoiding/minimizing cropping is one of the best things you can do to improve overall image quality (IMHO).

I will provide what I have learned over the years:

1. Slow. Move slow.
2. Understand your subject and when they become aware/alert to your presence being close. Then.....wait and let them become accustomed to you a bit.
3. Not every bird is photographable. Learn when to enjoy the bird and not worry about an image. Enjoy the outdoors!
4. As stated previously, zig zag. And try to keep something between you and your subject.
5. Try not to tower over the bird if it is low or on the ground.
6. Blinds/water source/food sources are best for some species.
7. I often stand still in a birdy place with the light to my back and wait for them to go about their day. I often end up with images then when they are relaxed going about their day.
8. When they are alert to your presence avoid eye contact.
9. Lastly, don't be in a hurry!!!!! Be it to close the distance, take the shot, etc.

I have birded most of my life as well as hunted. I have learned to be acutely aware of the subject. There is not really a quick fix to learn except by trial and error.
