Just sold my old 500mm vr g and got the new version. Handling is vastly improved imo, and I believe that focus is faster, although the old lens is fast to begin with. Here is a random shot from today's trip to the wildlife refuges. Northern harrier in flight....I didn't even know they have hair on their beak! Looks better at full resolution of course.

If I did a full switch to Nikon that would be the first big lens I'd buy. Enjoy the new toy

But I didn't pay nearly that much...and I sold my 500vr g to help defray a good chunk of it...Still expensive though, but I'm happy with it. Got a bunch of good ones today with it.

They don't, just specialized feathers.

Aren't feathers specialised hairs? Your comment is interesting, are they feathers that have 'turned back' into hairs or are they still recogniseably feathers?

"Bristles are stiff, tapering feathers with a large rachis but few barbs. Rictal bristles are found around the eyes and bill. They may serve a similar purpose to eyelashes and vibrissae in mammals."

I'll be suffering along with my 500 f4 VR G, still got
the guns so really don't see a need to 'upgrade'. Enjoy!

Congrats on the new lens! I think I'm going to bite the bullet and upgrade my 600 G to the 600E next year. I had a chance to handle one a few weeks ago in FL and I love the weight and better balance. I'm sick of of the 3~4 mile hikes with the 600G, D5, and 5 series Gitzo slung over my shoulder!

I agree Steve, the big difference to me is the handling. Slightly faster af is nice as well, but not as important to me. I thought about the 600e, but for me the added cost and weight were not what I wanted to stomach.

Honestly, I'm still debating if I want another 600mm or if I want to go back to the 500mm. It's a tough call to be sure. The 500E would be like a feather compared to what I've been using. I told my wife that I think I need the 500 AND the 600, but for now I can't use anything until I can see out of this black eye again

Indeed Steve, Nikon has made the "500mm or 600mm " question even harder with the new FL models it seems -- both are uber sharp and hand-holdable so it really all comes down to personal preference. I shot the 500G for many years and never had much of a problem with it but decided to jump to the 600E for the reach and because I can still handle 8.5 lbs. That said, I have to say since I'm using my D500 more than I thought I would (over my D810) the 500 might have been the better choice for all-round general wildlife use. Since I now own the 600 though, I'm going to wait until Nikon update the 200-400 or see if Nikon release a 400/4 PF before making any decisions about picking up up a 500. Best of luck with the black eye!

I think the 600mm is better. You never have too much reach. You amost don't need to use a tc with the 600mm f4e keeping maximum quality. I also love my 600 f4e, even thought I didn't have much time to try it. It is ultra sharp and I love the colors it produce along with the nice contrast. The bokeh is also buttery smooth. It is quite a lot of money but worth it in the end for the weight advangtage.

I much prefer the 500's wider field of view. It's often still too narrow on DX, but FX + 500 works great for just about anything I regularly encounter in the field.

I've debated that same issue over in Canon Land with their FL/E equivalents. Switching to Nikon is just too much of a financial hit although I have considered it after the D500...D5 and D810 would be my purchases (or D820).

However, in Canon land I was able to add the 400DOII which has many of its own benefits and pairs well with the 600II. Still the 500II was always on my mind.

Recently my main GAS has been for either the 600DO if/when it sees the light of day but also for the 400 2.8 that could replace my 600....losing the 1200mm option and gaining the 400 2.8 side which I've found I could have used in a number of recent situations.

I can never decide what I want....probably 400 2.8, 600DO, 400DOII and 100-400II would be my ideal Canon kit. Of course the 500II always tempts me but 600DO that may be as light as the 500II would negate its advantage.

I know these are Canon ramblings but I have no brand loyalty and I think the lens line up in this area is so similar that any thought from one system are totally valid in the other. Of course Canon's DO lenses add a little extra to that side of the fence. But Nikon has proven they have developed their PF (same as DO) in the recent 300. I'm sure they are working on longer PF lenses as we speak!!

The question is, does that comment have anything to do with camera equipment..or is he referring to 'other' equipment?

Birds evolved from reptiles. No hair on either. Hair is a mammalian characteristic.

I too would like to think a 400/4 PF is coming in Q1 of 2017.

My 500 G VR has been in a Nikon Pro Services for a bit and I've had the 500 FL on loan. Its a dream. Its considerably lighter and its image quality with a D5 is incredible.
