p.9 #1 · p.9 #1 · Your net GAS vs GRS for 2016

Now considering some GRS for 2017 in the way of:

D500
200-500
1.4TC

M5
15-45M
11-22M

I have no idea....will see....if M5 goes then maybe back to Fuji for GAS:

XT2
18-135
10-24
23 f/2

Will be fun to follow these predictions throughout the year....fun for those of us gearheads at least....real photographers need not apply

I'm getting a 50L and 100 L macro plus some light mods. I'll still need a 35L, 85L an 135L and bigger it will be my first primes in three decades

I used two mirrorless systems for about a year - the Canon M3 & the Fuji X100S & X-T1. I finally decided to stay with the Fuji's (mostly street photography & when low profile is necessary) and sold the M3, the ef-m lenses, and the accessories.

I decided, again, to "double down" on my Canon system - as my main gear. Now using 1DX2, 1D4, 5D, 7D2 & the little SL1. I'll probably sell my 70D, 60D and several of my ef-s lenses, and I'll probably add the 5D4 or the 5DSr - leaning at the moment towards the 5D4. My next major acquisition will be a 600/4 II, gulp. I must confess that there was a time in late 2016 that the dark side beckoned - as I came close to adding the D500 w/200-500mm & I'm drawn to the DF & it's ability to handle the older non-AI lenses (of which I use several - adapted as MF lenses on the X-T1).

I had two main issues with the Canon M system - the ef-m lenses = ~meh, and the ergonomics - I just couldn't get comfortable with the "fidgety" interface - never felt right in hand - the controls never became natural (as with my 1D's where the controls seem transparent & kinda just fade away - muscle memory?). While I loved the focus peaking on the M3, the rest of the camera = not so much.

My other focus will be GRS. While I've parted with about a dozen lenses in the past 2 months, I will offer twice again as many lenses for sale in 2017 - and my shelves will still be well populated - arguably over-populated.

Getting ready for my tax appointment tomorrow, so I have the details finally compiled.

SOLD:
50mm f/1.4d
Cactus V6II x2
Cactus v6I x6
Cactus RF60 x4
D600
D7100
D7000
105mm f/2.8G VR

BOUGHT:
LumoPro LP160 x4
Nikon D800 x2
180mm f/2.8D
60mm f/2.8D
Olympus OM-D E-M10
Panasonic 20mm f/1.7
Cactus V6II x2
SMDV Speedbox S70
TT685 X2
TT600 x5
AD360II x1
New SSDs and storage drive upgrades.

Additionally, I sold an X100s late in 2015 (replaced with the M43 camera and 20mm prime) and bought a Sigma 50 Art very very early in 2017.

I wasn't planning to spend much in 2016, but I spent about a grand more than I did in 2015.

Yes, if you see my OP you will see that I did some serious selling in 2016 but that didn't prevent a lot of buying also. I left Fuji and now may go back. M5 is nice but I think I just want the Fujinon glass. And the XT2 looks like a nice improvement on my previous XT1.

I greatly reduced my Canon bodies down now to only 3 (yikes I feel naked!!)...1DX, 1DX2 and 5D4. I did try the D500/200-500 and really like the body but the lens is worth what you pay for.

I would go 5D4 over 5DSR unless you are using controlled lighting and tripods. Otherwise for wildlife and sports the 5DSR doesn't make sense. I had it and switched to 5D4 and love it. 600II is amazing...won't sell that for awhile and only for 600DO or maybe just maybe 400 2.8. You will love that lens if you do acquire it.

As nice as the X-T2 looks, I'm just not sure I need it for street, family events & the other situations where I use it - alone, or paired with the X100S. Maybe someday, but not a current priority. As a prior Hassy shooter, Fuji's new MF system makes me feel like the proverbial moth drawn to the flame. I keep telling myself how impractical and unsuitable and unnecessary... yep. My general approach is to not purchase new bodies until at least 6 months after release. This is as much to temper my compulsive tendencies as any other reason.

It was only in the past month that I decided to use a 7D2. So far, so good - but the AF issues held me off. Congrats on getting down to 3 bodies. I doubt I'll ever manage that accomplishment. My 5D will be pried from my cold, dead hands. The 1D4 is on its 4th shutter, 2nd mirror box assmbly & has just surpassed 1.2 million clicks and looks near mint. Not likely for sale anytime soon. And the SL1 only leaves if my better-half takes a trip. Pleasant problems.

This year will be mostly the GRP as I need to lighten the shelves. But the 600 II and better sticks will happen, as will - probably - the 5D4. Living on a bank of a tidal river and halfway between Conowingo Dam (eagles) and Bombay Hook NWR (migratory) makes it almost seem reasonable.

almost.

At one point I had 7D, 7D2, 1D4, 1DX, 5D2, 5D3 all sitting around with most of them not being used (was basically just using 7D2 and 1DX.....). Then added a 5DSR and 80D and decided I had to stop the madness before getting the 1DX2. So sold off most everything. The 1D4 was last to go even after the 7D2 and I really wanted to keep it but hadn't touched it in a long time and actually never really shot it much from Day 1 (was bought used). May pick one up as a collectors item some day on the used market as they are dropping in value more and more.

GAS:

- 60D
- Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 90/3.5 SL II
- 600D + EF-S 18-55 IS II
- small computer upgrade (23" IPS monitor, SSD drive)

GRS:

- 60D (I prefer the smaller 600D)

Still trying to figure out what to do this year. Budget is very tight so unless I sell some gear there will be no major changes.

If you are buying a 32" 4K, or any monitor and you care about color accuracy, plz buy a calibrator and do it...factory color correction has a pretty short exp. time, given it was good to begin with.

Update: I still have not sold the GRS items I listed but they are all still going this year. I changed my mind on acquiring any new bodies this year (no guarantees I'll hold to that decision). Instead I am researching and trying to make a decision on a lens. The contenders are as follows: Sigma 35A, Canon 35 f2 IS, & Canon 24-70L v1. I'm still a few months away from that purchase. I will be buying a new small bag this month. The contenders are: Peak Design Sling or 20l backpack, Think Tank Trifecta, or Turnstile.

Update again:

GRS:
Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro
Sigma EX 10-20

GAS:
Ordered the Peak Design Everyday Sling today.

As for the lenses I've ruled out the Canon 35f2 IS and am seriously considering the older Canon 28-70L but the 35A is still very much desired.
