^^^ You are right, i focus mostly on the gear/equipment due to lack of passion or confidence or whatever, could be that i live in area or region where getting into birding isn't easy and using most of short to not that long lenses aren't cut it much, even with 600 it may not give/help much, so i felt if there where you are it is needed with 500-600 then here i need minimum 1000-1500mm.

I will try to give my 100-400 more use then, i didn't shoot birds for decades really, i think my latest were around 2008-2009 and it wasn't a real birding.

Just coming to those threads on forums of 1DXII or 5D4 or 400mm 2.8mkII or 600 making us envy jealous and even feeling that we aren't in match, sometimes you just keep watching and feel that you can't do anything because you don't have that tool you are watching results of, but sure any gear current i have is really capable of many things not just birding, but i can't make myself believe that i can beat those 500-600 prime results with just 70-200 and 100-400 lenses.

After spending three days shooting non stop with a 800mm f/5.6L IS, I'm starting to see why people prefer the 600II and are so interested in the potential 600DO. That 800mm is a heavy monster, and sometimes is too much focal length. I truly got to appreciate the benefits of 600mm f/4, 840mm f/5.6 and 1200mm f/8 of the 600II...and I got to appreciate the quality of using a Big White. Wow.

I would share some images here but this isn't the 800mm thread

I was still getting good shots when I was shooting with a 300 f4. When I moved to a 500 f4, the main difference in results is that they come more often because I don't have to spend as much time and effort getting closer to the birds. Sometimes I find that a 100-400 ii would be a better tool for bird photos, such as for hummingbirds and some birds in flight. The minimum focusing distance is hard to deal with sometimes for small birds.

Tareq from what I recaLL don't you have the 300 2.8 and 1dx? Get the 2xIII, attached it to the 300 2.8 and have some fun. I finally gave the 300 and 2x combo a try and it's a great walk arouND combo for those times when I feel like an adventure.

You'd get used to carrying the big whites because of the end results.

Yes, i have 300 2.8 but it is mk1 not the new one, and i have 1DX, and i already have 1.4xIII and 2xIII, but i thought the performance and IQ of this old 300 + 2X and 1DX is nothing close to say 1DXII or 7D2 and 600II.

That old 300 is better than you are giving it credit. I've used it with the 1D4 and 2x and it's quite nice. There are other on here that use this combo daily and if you posted up images, I'd bet you'd be hard press to identify which setup took the shot. You have to do the best with what you have and you have some of the best equipment. You just have to get out there with it.

Here are some samples of the 1D4, 300 and 2x - all handheld shots. If I use a tripod, I could probably get better images, but for hand holding, I don't think these are bad.

My apologies for clogging the thread with non 500-600 lens images, but I just wanted show what can be done with the 2x combo.

Don't show me the results, i know how good is this old 300, i use it in sports with my 1DX and before on 1D3/1D2n, and about 1 week or 2 i was shooting a football game using 300 and i got amazing results, i didn't show them here but i do post them on the other site [POTN], but i was talking about how much good they are compared to newer gear, and if this old lens is still great on older bodies such as 1D3 and 1D4 then i can't imagine how amazing wow is the new lens 600II on 1DX or 5D4.

In all cases, i use what i have currently, but i still wish and dream about newest.

Exactly. If I were to use this combo with the 1Dx or 5D3, the result maybe even better. You should try it with your 1Dx. I need to give this combo a try with the 1Dx and 5D3 myself.

Btw, I know you from POTN. I post over there, too.

I was playing with the 7D2's various focus zones. These images were capture using the large focus zone. I think I like this zone for BIF and may use it more.

^^^ So the lens gave that camera an advantage, in fact the quality is something to talk about, you also used 1.4x, the results you posted before earlier with 1D4 and 300 + 2X weren't that much nice compared to those last to be honest, getting just good acceptable results isn't equal getting that amazing detailed sharp results, but i know anyone point here to keep using old gear when new isn't affordable.

The lens definitely has it's advantages, but like I said if I use a tripod with the other setup, it would be just as good. I am not as steady as I used to be hand holding.

Again if I posted those images side by side with no exif data, you wouldn't know the gear used.

I'll leave it at that.
