Thought I would start up a thread for those considering one of these expensive monsters.

I just purchased the 600mm from B&H, they are offering 4% back to be used for future purchases (gotta wait 30 days).... which roughly means you get an almost free teleconverter... and Canon has a buy two lenses get money.... and both of these are on that list..... I couldn't resist. Replaced Canon foot with Jobu Arca Swiss for my Wimberly.

Quick impressions: I had the 500mm IS Gen I for about five years (now selling it!) and it was great... this one is simply sharper and more colorful.. sorry, I am just an amateur so you get amateur impressions. Focus target acquisition appears to be a bit flaky-er and slower than my Gen I with my 5DSr in AI Servo mode 3/3 points, Case 2. Odd.... not bad but my Gen I was a bit better. I just shot this one day so far.

An example of the flaky-ness for those that know the dam: With AI Servo tracking at 3x3 Case 2, the focus was more likely to lose the bird and grab the power cables as the bird flew threw them than with the Gen I lens.

My Reiken Focal denoted +5 focus adjustment and I ran their aperture-sharpness test and it shows f/5.6 was sharpest... I need to run these tests again with better camera support... I found that Reiken can be flaky with these long lenses if the camera is not on rock solid support.

Below, these are almost 100% crops..... I shot this guy so far out, I thought it was going to be a throw away... but was surprised when I pulled it up in light room and clicked 1:1. Not the best, but given the darn thing was so far away, I thought you would be interested in it. Shot yesterday.

Peace

Thanx for the 1.4x..... I gave up on the 1.4x II with my 500mm ... it just slowed the camera down and fuzzed up my deep crops. Others get great results but I gave up. I am debating ... should I get the 1.4x III with the 4% back or use the cash for something else. In general, I hate those darn teleconverters.

Rob, what body are you using and does the 1.4x slow it down? What do you think of with/without the 1.4x? Fabulous shots by the way.

Peace

The 1.4x/2x III series mate really well with the II superteles. AF and image quality is noticeably better over the II TCs or the gen 1 lenses.

I use the 1dx mark II with the 600mm. The 1.4x is outstanding with the AF speed and image quality. If I was you I would consider at least trying the 1.4x, I think you will be pleased at the dam with it. I am comparing this to my 800mm speed too. I have not used it much due to the fact I bought the 600mm this year. So far it is outstanding, like you I do not like the TC's but the series III TC's are top notch. TC's have there place when needed for sure.

Oh yeah...celebrating two of Canon's finest lenses....these two are always top of the list for anyone shooting birds and wildlife....my recent 400 2.8 thread non withstanding

I will start off with the bare lens....later I will add an 840 set and then the true test of manhood, the handheld 1200mm set

1.4TCIII works flawlessly on my 600II. No hint of AF slowdown and that has been on 5D3, 7D2, 1DX, 1DX2 and 5DSR.

Get it and you will be happy....I will make you that guarantee. I own two 1.4TCIIIs as I use them a lot on all my lenses.

The 2xTCIII still produces great images but its tough to use on 5DSR. AF is not great. However, it is really good on 1DX2 and I would assume on 5D4.

I'm going to be a bit protective (a la PetKal) and post a small overall picture, since this is an extremely rare bird with perhaps some commercial value:

Verreaux Eagle Owl

Shot with 5DIII, 500 ver II, 1.4XIII, in South Africa. Taken completely hand held, no bracing, and not using my custom designed Southern Africa long lens support system. Shows full image (quite far away at 700mm) and two 100% crops of the same image.

I had an opportunity to use the 600 f4 IS II when I was field testing a pre-production 7D MII. It's an amazing piece of big glass - pin sharp and very fast focusing, and almost as light as my previous 500 f4 IS. I would have bought one now, if only the 600 f4 DO wasn't announced.

I had a Series 1 500mm for about 6 years, and last February upgraded to a Series II. I was tempted by the 600 but it was too big for me and didn't suit my shooting style. While the lens itself is tack sharp, adding a 1.4x III TC, IMHO, makes images equally as sharp with a slight slow down in focus acquisition. My 1.4x is virtually permanently attached to my 500vII.

The image attached is from "the dam"... this marks my 14th year going there.

When I first got my 500mm F4 II I really didn't like it No way did it compare with the 300mm F2.8 II + x2 TC III but the 1DX and 1DX2 transformed it..

That surprises me that the 500II wouldn't have outperformed the 300II/2XTCIII. I used the 300/2x combo a lot before selling it for the 400DOII but compared to my 600II the 300/2x was not even close. I'm sure the 500II is about equal to the 600II so it just surprised me to read your impressions compared to the 300/2x combo.

What camera was it on before the 1 series? Could it have been an MFA issue on that one body? Anyways glad it is working great on your 1DXs. Great shot of the grebes.
