I saw the thread, rented the 400mm f/2.8 G for a weekend in fall of 2015, and now I own one. Simple as that - if you have use for the lens, it is very easy to justify. Weight is no issue for me, coming from a 14 pound AIS 600mm f/4 which I do handhold when I need to.

The 400/2.8 G creates magical stuff when pointed at fast moving distant subjects, and it does portraits, too!

This is a beautiful shot!! Do you mind if I ask how much of the "ambiance" is the lighting, and how much was post? Specifically the shadows of the background? Dodge & burn, or just the way the light fell?

Wish I could fit a 400mm f2.8 into my budget!

ha, it started out exposed for the highlights on the car on a dark day, so in RAW it looked flat and underexposed and got me started to do a little creative editing, given this shot had been catching dust in Bridge since September 2015. There used to be some detail in the distance where the road turns right, faint brush and a little wooden structure. Ran that through SilverEfex pro 2 and found as a starting point one of the dark Film Noir setting with a heavy vignette that dropped all that detail. It was far too dark, but fit the mood I was trying to enhance. So I moved the center of the vignette to the car itself (off center), adjusted a zillion sliders until I liked the black and white.

Once back in Photoshop, I looked at the color again and decide to combine the two versions (luminance channel blend). Presto. Yeah, the real light wasn't that dramatic, but the depth of field, the detail in the dandelions in the grass and highlights n the curbing, all that is there. You don't really want that lens to have such a vignette all the time

similar shot, same day, same light but 2 stops more ISO but shutter speed faster, much less tweaked but heavily cropped.

A little D810 fun with the 400mm f/2.8 G from September 2015

First the near full screen view of the panning shot, handheld, and then a tight crop of the detail image center

something a little different - a 1950s Allard J2 race car, the precursor to the AC Cobra and other sports cars that put a big V8 into a small British sports car chassis. Only 90 of these were built between 1950 and 1952

Posted this in the sports forum, but maybe better placed here?

Picked up a 400mm 2.8 AF-I (Nikon). Questions as follows

1. AF noises - It's noticeably louder than my 70-200 VR lens. No nasty grinding noises or anything, but you can hear the AF motor spinning. Is that normal? I assume the AF-S (later version) is more quiet like my more modern 70-200 VR?

2. Wow is it heavy! What are you guys doing as far as padding on your monopods to make carrying it a little less painful

3. Cleaning the exterior. The glass is flawless but the body has seen better days. What/how would you clean the exterior of dirt/dust? Any products you'd avoid?

thanks in advance

Noise? my VR is near silent. Never used the AF-I, but you may have a problem. I bought a later lens because parts for the older lenses are getting harder to find.

weight - I see no problem with this lens. I am coming from a 14 pound 600mm f/4 AIS and this lens is nothing compared to that. I would never carry it using the monopod, though. My aftermarket lens food is a lightly padded carry handle, plus a strap over the shoulder for additional safety or occasional hand relief.

use rubbing alcohol, mild soap and water on a microfiber rag to clean it. The rubber parts can use some conditioning with 303 aerospace protectant (amazon)
