The problem with the generic batteries I checked into for the EOS-M5 is they will not charge on the Canon charger and will not communicate with the camera, so no reporting of the remaining charge. They require their own charger and will work in the camera though.

yes, but it will tell the generic battery has eventually "failed" - very easy to replace

Dual IS ... In Body + In Lens (but notes say IBIS is with video only ... any feedback @ stills with IBIS yet)?

80D quality IQ + dual pixel AF.

Touch movement while using viewfinder is a nice touch also ... especially if touch zoom is active too

Happy with my 80D, but the IBIS does make one thing about all that glass that doesn't have IS ... namely the recent SIggy Art series and the litany of legacy glass.

EVF responsiveness would likely be a key component.

Looks crisper / sharper than the 80D in the RAW

Late reply but the IBIS is a video software feature only. There is no physical IBIS system like in Sony and Olympus etc.

I borrowed an M5 for a couple weeks. Didn't shoot a lot with it, but did take it to a week-log gig shooting university convocations.

TS-E 45/2.8 wide open full swing. Used focus peaking and eyeballing the EVF without magnification, but hit rate was 50-50 in part because the grads were inconsistent hitting the 'X' marked for them on the stage.

50mm 1.2 looks good on the M5

I wonder how this cheap Chinese 50mm 1.1 would look

Just acquired this body.
Tried it with my EF lenses 17-40 f/4, 24-70 f/2.8, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.2, 70-200 f/2.8. 24-105 f/4, 100 Macro f/2.8 and 200-400 f/4. Perfect compatibility in all regards. Going to use it purely as a back-up on a trip to the Tetons next week. Then use it regularly after that for general leisure photography.
Two downsides so far, but livable. First, no sleep mode, so need to turn it off to conserve battery. Second, if using auto ISO, no shutter speed control. Camera sets the shutter speed. Usually OK, but for moving subjects, usually too low. So far, I like it a lot.

Hi CW -

I am still trying to figure how the flash works. I rarely (almost never) get the red prompt to open the popup on the camera. ETTL is fine with external flash. Manual is vague on how to use it. Any tips?
Thanks,
John

I don't think I've ever used the pop-up flash on the M5. My 430exII works fine. I'll try using the popup today

the red prompt didn't appear for me either but the pop-up flash worked fine when I pressed the button and choose the flash in the menu. ETTL exposure looked good in Manual and Av mode

Thanks!
I guess when it looks dimly lit, I can shoot twice. Once with no prompt and once by popping it up. Would like to be prompted though..... Still learning the camera.

I tried it again on full auto and "P" mode, in some dark situations I can see a little red flash prompt at the lower right but I still have to push the flash button on for the pop-up to engage and add flash in the shot. For me it's not much of an inconvenience because I rarely (if ever) use the pop-up flash.
