There isn't much about this lens on the internet, but I thought it deserved a thread. I just picked one up, so I'll update with some proper images as I integrate this into my work.

This is the original 300mm f/4 AF lens from 1988. It has 8 elements in 6 groups. 82mm front filter and 39mm drop in filter. The construction and feel is very similar to my 180mm f/2.8d. Both have exposed aperture blades at the rear, similar focus rings, and built in metal hoods.

Here is one of my first test shots, the only wildlife in my back yard at the moment. At portrait distances, it is sharp wide open and hand held.

The lens.

Nice dog image. This lens has been on my radar so I'm anxious to see more pics.

I have been going back and forth on selling/keeping it. I think I have settled on keeping it because it's light and sharp

And resale demand is pretty low. I got mine in excellent condition from Used Photo Pro (Robert's Camera) for $262 shipped, with a 1 year warranty. Hard to say no to that deal, and also hard to rationalize selling it with so little return.

I had got mine new in the 90s and after 3 years sold it for just shy of what I paid. Now it would be a huge loss.

Wondering how is it with a teleconverter and how the AF is.

Sluggish AF, IQ not bad stopped down a bit. Judicious use of the Focus Limiters
will help some, as will prefocusing on a spot. The Nikon TC-14E's won't mount,
I used a Kenko Pro (Tamron etc.) and got some decent shots. The AF-S is better
on all counts, save build quality.

I've owned this lens forever, I just went for a walk today with it mounted on the Df. I sometimes use it with a closeup filter that was intended for the Nikkor 8.5 - 25cm f4.5 manual focus zoom lens.

It was a stretch to use the 300 indoors, but I had lights up already doing some photos by the tree of the kid and dog and I wanted to see what this thing could do in a controlled situation. It makes some big pretty bokeh out of xmas lights, that's for sure!

I never thought to use this lens for portraits and now I see it is very capable. Will have to experiment with it some more.

Yeah, so far so good. I was concerned that the AF-S version might be a better choice because the MFD is shorter, but I don't think I'd need to be any closer than 8' anyway.

It was clear (and cold as #$%) tonight, so I grabbed a shot of the moon. This is a 1:1 crop at 1200x800 pixels from the middle of the frame.

I sold this lens ~ 14 years ago, so I have just old slides taken with this tele.
A very good lens, but the 300/4 Af-S which I bought (and still have) just before selling the old one, is far superior in almost all characteristics, except for body construction and tripod collar.

had this lens and the d2x on the buy/sell/craigslist but after way too many scam calls and emails common sense kicked in and decided not to sell either.

took it out for a quick snap of the horses as the snow came down about an hour ago.

Shot a family just before the holiday, and decided to bust out the 300 for a group. If you've got the space to back up, it is a good look.

Here's another portrait at 300. Despite being long in the tooth, this thing is kind of remarkable at focusing.

Here's a couple with mine, shot at the arrival of the B-25s at National Museum of the USAF in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid. Had to shoot with the front of the lens against a chain link fence.

totally agree, especially on the D800 over my D2X which I use it for to photograph the mountains around where I live.
