p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Can I use a Quick Release on a Monopod without a Head?

I have a tripod setup already but was thinking that sometimes I might want to just carry my monopod along. Mainly use 100-400 II, 400 f/5.6, or 70-200 lenses. I was thinking I'd like to just mount a RRS lever release plate without using a monopod head. Would that work? I don't plan on using this setup all that often and didn't want to invest in a monopod head. But if that's not an ideal setup, I'll look at heads (and could use some suggestions for the above gear). My monopod is a relatively inexpensive Manfrotto 680B.

Sure, that would work, as long as you don't need to tilt your camera to a large degree quickly.

Yes, since very few of the athletes are found in the trees.

Sure, but I highly advise adding a tilt head, then mounting the quick release plate on it. The whole idea of a monopod is to place the camera/lens at the center of gravity so the monopod remains perfectly vertical and steady. If you start having to tilt the column, you start losing the benefits of using the monopod.

As the lenses you mentioned are relatively small, (compared with larger, faster super telephotos), you would be fine just attaching via tripod collar directly to the monopod. Unless you have arca plates attached to all your lenses, why the need for the quick release?

I share a RRS MH-01 tilt head between two monopods.

I use Arca QR clamps on my monopods (& tripods). Not very quick to mount otherwise. Plus I never remove the QR plates from my cameras except when I sell them. I don't think a tilt head is needed if you mainly shoot track sports but if you use the monopod for shooting above crowds, around corners, out windows or even selfies, you'll want a tilt head.

Most sports photogs don't have to tilt their cameras very much.

And the OP didn't say whether or not he is shooting sports or birds...
And guess what, you can lean the monopod back a few degrees and viola it is pointing up

I should have specified what I mainly shoot. I'm not a sports photographer. I mainly like to shoot birds. Shore birds, specifically; sometimes in flight and other times wading or perched in low lying branches. I hand hold a lot but I'm not as steady as I'd like to be. I thought a monopod would help when I'm not carrying my tripod. My lenses all have RRS plates and my cameras have RRS L-brackets. Even if I'm tilting the monopod, I think I might be a little steadier. I just wondered if I could go "headless"! Good to know I can. Thanks everyone.
