House Sparrows...these guys have been at a select few backyard feeders all winter long in downtown Whitehorse.
Not the most exciting bird but I thought I might as well take a few snaps of them.

I like these Canon Season topics...so I wanted to post these "last day of winter' shots taken today along the Merced River below Yosemite. The Redbud, early small flowers, and butterflies were out in full force. Sorry they weren't taken with my Canon camera, but they were shot using a Canon lens...

Well, someone just woke up to see this thread being winded down. In my defense I can say that I was intending to ship this series off for publishing, but this fell through so I'm putting it up for your viewing pleasure.
I shot this in early November last year but the weather (and the whole ambience) was certainly wintry. So here's for your viewing pleasure... the Mari pagan gathering. This nation inhabiting the Mari El republic in the Volga midstream has been dubbed "Europe's last pagans" (dunno if the GEO magazine title has stuck, or the author drew on some "common knowledge"). Either way I'm not sure that they're really the "last" but the subject was nevertheless interesting and inspiring. My distant relative, Stanislav Snopchenko, lives in Mari El, and even though he's not an ethnic Mari, he knows a lot about these traditions - and organized a trip for me with the aid of the local government's chief photographer.

The worshippers gather in sacred groves outside the villages / cities. Smaller scale assemblies are common, but the All-Mari one like this is only held once every two years, I was told. For this, people were coming from as far afield as Surgut.

These people in white felt hats are the priests. Oddly enough the hats remind me greatly of Kyrgyz headdresses, even though the Kyrgyz are a completely different nation ethnically and dwell far away from Volga.

If you're wondering, "12" is the region code for Mari El. Interesting enough, these region codes are derived (mostly) from the order the regions are named in the Constitution (later, when some regions were being merged, the order went wrong in spots), and are used in many types of work. For example, in land plot IDs, taxpayer IDs, and whatnot; the only notable exceptions that come to mind are the zip codes and phone numbers - these remain largely intact from the times of the USSR.
(to be concluded)

A little addendum from November's journey: between exploring Yoshkar-Ola and visiting the pagan ritual, we've ventured out to Cheboksary - the capital of the neighboring region, Chuvash republic. It's interesting that the Chuvash are completely different nation ethnically and linguistically from the Mari - they're Turkic. My relative said that there is a little bit of tension between the two - showing up in, for example, the tendency of the road police in Chuvashia to have prejudice against the drivers of the cars with Mari license plates (12/RUS as opposed to 21/RUS in Chuvashia), not forgiving minor violations and writing tickets instead.

Our visit was very brief and the weather inclement, so there isn't much to show. Overall the city looks pretty typical.

R-176 road between Yoshkar-Ola and Cheboksary. We saw a crashed truck in a ditch along the way, but I decided not to stop to photograph it because I wasn't on duty - and pretty far from home turf anyway. By the looks of it, the police and medics had already done their job by the time we arrived, even though getting the heavy vehicle out of its resting place was probably going to take longer.

A wooden ship on the embankment. Note the lantern post design - it's similar to one of the symbols found on the runestone above.

I can imagine that in summer it's pretty pleasant around, but not in the pre-winter snow and slush. After eyeballing the surroundings for a little, we set back to Yoshkar-Ola.
