Now you'll understand why I've given up posting in the Autumn thread, and even asked for general approval of starting a winter one (but decided to avoid jumping the gun, and wait for someone else to do this). That's because since early November, we didn't have a proper autumn! I was outta town from Nov. 4 to Nov. 6 (that little voyage is a subject for another post), but when I returned the city was swathed in snow! The authorities reported that in the first few days of November we've had half as much snow as in all of the winter 2015-16! (which wasn't particularly warm and/or snowless).
Which brings us to the subject of my first entry in the thread... an evening cleanup on the city's main street.
I might add that last winter, St. Pete's made a pretty big jump in winter cleanup: the beautification department has decided that the city has had enough of the salt that creates the trademark winter slush, corrodes stuff and causes vapour that may not be very healthy for the inhabitants. Therefore they decided that they just need to work better. As well, they switched to using a sand/salt mixture and even granite shards - about the same as they do in Helsinki. The head of the department is a pretty nice guy (and professional) - come to think of it, even some of the citizen organizations that are seemingly never happy about anything proposed that he be given an award for keeping the city squeaky clean during the last winter season.
P. S. And a few days later, after much effort to remove all that snow (which now goes to the special melting stations where it is dissolved in wastewater so there's no need for additional processing), the temperatures have shot up again, and everything has just melted down. Go figure.
