It's nice to finally have a 70-200 that gives you more magnification (and more blur) at close distances. The new 70-200 FL is fantastic for headshots. I thought the 200 f/2 had the fastest AF ever.. but the new 70-200 feels even faster. I'm serious.. try it for yourself. It's damn instantaneous. The more I use this lens, the more I'm convinced that the price tag is justified. It's just a damn GOOD lens.

Thanks for posting pictures from the same "session" shot with the 105E and the 70-200E! The zoom doesn't look too bad "bokeh-wise" in comparison, of course comparing [email protected]/1.4 to [email protected]/2.8.

What would you say in terms of "3D-ness" of rendering? The 105E's pictures seem to "pop" really nice in good light when used wide open. How do you like the 70-200E in that regard?

Trying to decide which lens to save for...

Thanks!

Markus

Markus,

If I could only choose one lens, it'd be the 105 1.4E.

Both lenses have almost identical MFD's (~3.3 ft) but when shot at the same distance, the 105 1.4E has a much more pleasing look. You buy the 70-200 for versatility.. but for pure rendering pleasure, it's the 105 1.4E everytime.

Also to be honest, the 70-200 FL's zoom ring still trips me up.

I shot volleyball last night with the 70-200 and got to really like the zoom ring placement. I was changing it very often and through the full range easily, finding using my fingertips to manipulate the ring very natural.

Some people adapt easily, others may not. Many lenses require a unique approach, but when I think "one gets it", it's like riding a bike when switching lenses. I'm still trying to find a natural feeling hand placement on the 200/2.

For bokeh, POP and portraits it's the 200mm F2.0 (with or W/O TCs).

I've been a bit smug these past weeks, laughing a little inside at how much I still love my (relatively inexpensive) Nikkor 80-200. Figured "the internet" was just excited, as usual, for something shiny and new. But as a "Dad with a camera" these sweet images -- on top of the reports of blazingly quick AF and a wonderful close focus ability -- are becoming too much to deny. I don't need it, but I want it.

I'm in a similar position. I own the 70-200 VRI and I don't need to upgrade it but if I'm pushed by this thread and other great images on the net I might make the switch at some point in the near future.

With that said can those lucky enough to own this lovely glass please post more picture and provide some more feedback.

Same here. I think the new 105 is probably the best lens I've owned and the only one that makes you say "wow" like when I first owned the 200 f2 and saw the very first shots. There isn't any need to shoot anywhere but 1.4. I've never owned a 1.4 lens before that I thought was good enough to do that and I've tried them all.

Just placed my order....Hope I don't regret it but the consensus seems to be that this is the best 70-200 made yet so that's reassuring news.

Anyone try the new lens with any TC-E IIIs yet? Compatibility/Issues/IQ?

Six weeks in crutches, but I'm half way there and felt good enough to get out of the house today. Mixed clouds and decent light, so I tested the new lens. Felt really good to shoot again.

I'm very happy with my results thus far. Lens is as rich as the 80-200 with the benefit of VR (when needed) and snappy AF. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the minimum focus distance (3.6ft/1.1m) is quite freeing.
