I would give them a try. I always shake each cartridge before installing them, even brand new ones. If they don't work, they don't work. I do not think you can cause any damage to your printer by trying.
The ink does have a shelf-life, but I have never experienced any issues with ink still sealed in it's original packaging. I have also stored cartridges (matt black ink) in ziplock bags after they have been opened and never had any issues.
