p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · My D800 hidden treasures

I recently upgraded my D800 to D810 and at the same time purchased 4K Notebook just to enjoy the new camera. During the D800 years i was always complaining about the lack of sharpness and details especially when longer focal length (above 200mm) was used.
Well... to my surprise, i discovered that due to the lower resolution screens i used before,
i never experienced such level of details and sharpness i experience now.
So i visited all the old D800 folders just to say for the first time: "WOW", while revealing the D800 hidden treasures.

Indeed...but at the same time I cannot see much from a 1000pix web images in photo forums on my 5K 27" iMac.

That extra resolution (and probably shadow detail & DR) will probably help you find stuff you've screwed up, too!

Great to hear. I often wish for higher FPS than my D800 which would imply a lower-pixel body.

If my MacBook Pro dies, I may replace it with a Dell XPS 15 with 4K monitor (even higher than the MacBooks) and then enjoy the D800 in full glory.

I believe that anyone who is doing photography for a hobby should do themselves a favour and update to a UHD screen. I love my 3840 x 2160 screen!

I've never appreciated the 36MP files until I upgraded to a 27" cinema display last year. Wow! Astounding details...

It s a unfortunate trade-off. I could buy a UHD screen but any I could afford the colour accuracy would suck

I always inspected the images in 100% view but if the display has 70 pixels per inch, i get that the actual pixels in 100% cannot change that. 300 display pixels per inch is a different story...
Even my i Mac 27"can do 200 pixels per inch.
That is why a 15" 4K is a very D800 friendly display. (300 pixels per inch)
Nikon should have printed on the D800 box: 4K Display required....
By the way i decided to go with the AZUS Zenbook Pro which is so far a dream machine....

Sorry to hear that.

I must say that my Dell screen isn't all that expensive and for display purposes is very accurate, I also use a screen colour calibrator, by X Rite.. I have a Dell P2715Q.

It is partly my own fault since I don't like 16:9 screens as 16:10 fits 3:2 so much better which only leaves 32" screens.

I've had the macbook pro retina screen for a while now, and have always appreciated the output that my D800 is capable of.

Is 2560x1440 UHD? My current Hazro is this res. I thought 4k was 38xx and up

I've still not had the chance to see any of my D800 files on a retina screen but some people say it is better than a print as it's like a big backlit transparency.

Upgrading screens to 4k was a blessing and a curse. I love the ability to see fine detail on the 36MP images but then found myself wanting to go back into my Lightroom catalog and change edits on previous photos. I found with lower resolution screen I tended to more heavy handed with the edits.

I had the same impression with my first 2560x1440 screen. I have also been disappointed by the lack of details of my first D70 pictures...
4K (or 5K) must of course be even more impressive.

Higher res screens for viewing are a good argument for high MP cameras from a future proofing pov. A 5k screen is already 15MPish.

See, I wonder - will hi-res monitors and hi-Mp cameras be the death of printed images. If you have several monitors scattered around your house for viewing hi-res images, do you need prints? Two different mediums and experiences, but I think the hi-res experience may be preferred.

We can already quickly 'screen cast' to large TVs, comp screens etc. so yes, it may well kill the print. I think people do still like to hold something in their hand to look at it too so tablets will always be a feature also.

I'd love to see a D800/810 file on a large 8k TV.
