We're notoriously hard on our lenses. About 2 years ago we switched to Nikon and have noticed that lenses on Nikon mount (both Nikon and Sigma lenses) seem to be breaking way more than my Canon lenses used to.

In the last 2 months we've had 6 or 7 lenses go down for various reasons. It's frustrating and exhausting. Has anyone else noticed something similar with Nikon?

Could you expound on what you mean by "breaking"? Mechanical failure (focus, aperture blades, VR, zoom ceases to function)? Or more physical damage occurs (mount breaks off due to impact damage, zoom/focus ring sticks or comes off)?
I work with a guy who is pretty hard on his gear too but his 24-70 and 70-200 still work great. They ain't pretty but they work.

Never broken a lens (yet). Which lenses are at fault? What kind of stuff are you breaking?

I think your sample size is too small to draw any definite conclusions.

Now that I'm shooting more with the 1.8 primes vs the 2.8 zooms I'm having less lens repairs. I haven't had a lens repair in more than two years. Even though one of our 35 f1.8 has either fallen or been dropped three times it has not yet needed to be repaired. Externally you can't tell that it has been dropped and images are still coming out sharp. When shooting exclusively the f2.8 zooms I had at least one repair a year and always in excess of $600 charges per lens. In one season I had over $1,300.00 in lens repairs on two 70-200s. The zoom lenses seem to be especially sensitive to impact damage to every little bump.

I know many people do not like the feel of the plasticky f1.8 primes but I truly believe that they can take a beating and/or a drop better than the lenses with lots of heavy glass. They seem to be more resilient to mishandles and bounce better.

My sigma aperture springs failed but thats it and a very minor repair I had done locally. I am also hard on my gear.

What is breaking? Unless you are dropping them, I dont know what could be happening.

I only have 4 Nikon mount lenses (14-24 from Nikon, and 35, 50, and 85 Sigma), and I have never had any issues with the mounts at all.

No issues on my Nikon lenses. But the D750 acts up more than I'd like.

The d750 is made of cardboard and runs windows 98. I desperately coax the elves to reluctantly draw pictures every weekend.

I used to have bent mount frames all the time. Drove me crazy as they were never dropped.

Now I take the lenses off the camera when they are in the bags for transport. I think they were being bend in the bags in transport.

One of my biggest gripes with going to Nikon is the build quality of their lenses. I'm surprised that I havent heard more stories like yours. Canon's lens build (L and non L) is definitely superior.

For those asking about breaking...

• My 16-35 got sand in it. Obviously my fault.
• 45 tilt shift wasn't changing aperture. Needed a new something or other in there. Was expensive.
• Sigma 35 aperture spring wasn't working. I fixed that myself
• Sigma 20 just stopped AF. No drops or anything. Just stopped.
• Nikon 58 stopped AF and needed a replacement AF motor. No reason. Just stopped.
• Nikon 85 1.4 stopped AF and needed new motor. No reason.

This is all since September.

Woa, that is a little of everything. IIRC you have the 105 DC in your kit. Lots of D lenses have a higher level build.

Also seeing some Sigma complaints in there as well. As I recall, Tony's defection from Canon began with a repair/warranty issue — didn't it?

Beginning to think Team Hoffer = Torture Test :-)

That wasn't a primary reason for leaving but the decline of CPS meant that it was no longer a benefit of staying. We've always been hard on gear, but it's never been like this. It seems every shoot I pick up a lens and it doesn't function.
