Thanks to everyone who replied.
While I am not one to whine about such things, I've got to say that this is a bit of a design flaw!
Anyway, I put myself in "zen" mode and devised a plan, as the prior 60 minutes got me nowhere. In the end,I managed to shove a plastic fulcrum in a gap between the cap and the mount. Without applying too much pressure I rotated the cap too and fro and it finally came free.
Today I will test to see if I bent anything important. At this point, nail polish now marks the spot on my cap.
