p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What gear for trip to D.C.?

My wife and I and our 9 year old son leave for DC tomorrow night for a week long vacation. I'm not sure which gear I want to take and thought I'd ask for a bit of advice. We'll be seeing the air and space museum, natural history museum, holocaust museum, capitol, white house, monuments, and various other DC sites and landmarks.

I'm planning on taking a body, 2 lenses, and maybe a flash. The question is, what do I take? I'm leaning toward the following:

5dii with 16-35 f/4 is and 70-200 ii and a 580ex.

Will that setup serve me well? I've also got a 7dii that I could take in place of the 5dii and a 24-105 (and various others I've ruled out) I can sub in for one of the others, but I think my planned setup above is as good as I'll get with my gear.

Opinions please!

For family stuff and the general sites, the 5D and 24-105 is all I'd take. Flash helps a great deal with the midday family shots. I'd only take the wide angle for indoor shots in the museums, but probably leave it behind.

You will be covered with those focal ranges, though I would consider packing a tripod for late night missions near the mall.

I'm nearly certain that I want to take the 70-200, so the question really becomes 24-105 or 16-35 f4 IS.

24-105 and 70-200. I used a 24-70, a 35/F2 and a 70-200 myself on my last trip to DC and they were fine. And most definitely take a tripod, as the days are short now and you will definitely feel the need for one to get shots in the twilight and at night.

FWIW, here is a Flickr link to several of my DC albums. Nothing earth shattering, but you may get some ideas.

I'd suggest the 24-105mm instead of your ultra wide. 16mm is useful for some shots to exaggerate tall buildings or get in very large objects like in a museum atrium, but soon all your images look distorted. I recently opted not to take my 24-70mm on a trip and only a 17-40mm and was really disappointed.

Another vote for also taking along the 24-105 on your trip.

What's the flash for? It won't be much use and may not be tolerated in museums either. I'd leave that at home for starters.

I was in DC last weekend, and spent a couple hours at the Natural History Museum, where there are two special exhibits that are perfect for photographers.

The butterfly pavilion is amazing. Hundreds of species, all alive, and all in a very small area with great opportunities for close-ups. The 70-200 would be perfect, but be prepared to get hot and sweaty--they keep it at 80 degrees and 80% humidity (so give your lens and body time to adjust) to keep the hundreds of species (butterflies and plants) happy. I could have spent an hour or two had I prepared better (extra tshirts, etc). Oh, and no tripods.

And, on the same floor, there's an exhibit of winners and honorable mentions for the 2016 Nature's Best photography awards. Wildlife (mammals, birds, underwater) and landscape images that are inspiring and beautiful.

One more recommendation...use the cityshare bikes to see the monuments and the mall, take along your own bike lock so you can stop and get off and walk around.
