I was in DC last weekend, and spent a couple hours at the Natural History Museum, where there are two special exhibits that are perfect for photographers.
The butterfly pavilion is amazing. Hundreds of species, all alive, and all in a very small area with great opportunities for close-ups. The 70-200 would be perfect, but be prepared to get hot and sweaty--they keep it at 80 degrees and 80% humidity (so give your lens and body time to adjust) to keep the hundreds of species (butterflies and plants) happy. I could have spent an hour or two had I prepared better (extra tshirts, etc). Oh, and no tripods.
And, on the same floor, there's an exhibit of winners and honorable mentions for the 2016 Nature's Best photography awards. Wildlife (mammals, birds, underwater) and landscape images that are inspiring and beautiful.
One more recommendation...use the cityshare bikes to see the monuments and the mall, take along your own bike lock so you can stop and get off and walk around.
