I still can't decide on a body, although after hearing reviews from owners who owned both D500 and D810, seems like the D810 is still holding ground. The D810 has so many rebates now, its a great time to pick up one of the two. So, based off my pictures.. if anyone wants to take a quick look, what do you think?

Here are the highlights for buying the D500;

- Not cropping. Not professional. Not selling pics. Not printing.

Here are the highlights for buying the D810:

- Shoot lots of landscapes and landscapes. Pixel peeper. Shoot very little video.

So your gallery shows that it was all shot on the D810. I'm confused.

it appears you are mainly shooting landscapes and static subjects.

i don't own a d500, but based on users inputs and reviews, the new improved af engine and fast fps are useful for dynamic subjects.

I sold my last D810. Now I wanna get another body, and I'm looking between the D500 and D810

I have both D500 and D810 and seriously, I only use D500 when I need the reach, AF in extremely low light or when FPS and more accurate and faster continuous AF is neccessary. D500 AF is amazing. The other day, I was taking a picture of a friend in a very dark room where the main source of lighting was just iphone screen and D500 can actually locked focus reasonably well. For the type of shots that you posted, I don't see where D500 would really be beneficial over your D810 and personally, I would use D810 over D500 for these types of shots any day.

If it's a hard decision, if you get a good price on a used D500, or you can rent it, do so. If you love it, want a new one instead, then go for it.
Since you know what D810 is to you, by trying a D500 you can figure out which is better (for you).
Personally if I tried D810 and D500 was a step back (in pixels, size for example), I would want the D810 back, since I don't like losing something I had.

Or something "lesser" and "just enough" can be fun...... until you decide you can't decide and need one of each, because sometimes it's D500 you want, and other times it's D810.

I used 6D, 5D III and 1D X, which are in order of "expense/features", meaning 6D is most affordable, then 5D III, then 1D X. Eventually I settled on owning 6D and 1D X, because 1D X I want to action (sports), and 6D I want as a "cheaper yet good" second camera, for shooting with 2 cameras when there is no time/desire to switch bodies. During my purchase time, the price was about $1000 for 6D and $3000 for 1D X (used prices) vs $1800 for 5D III. And I wanted 2 bodies. 6D + 5D III I would miss out on the action camera (and buffer recovery ability), 5D III + 1D X cost too much, and 6D + 1D X felt like the choice for me. In the past I had 1 camera at a time.
Now if I was picking a camera, it would be either 5Ds R or 5D IV, or if I was in Nikon world, D810. The action/sports is a seasonal attraction for me, during Sept-Nov and May, but more recently it's just a week in November, rest of the year I could do with a landscape focused camera like 5Ds R or D810.

based on your photos...the 810
for landscape i'd take FF any day, i don't see anything there requiring an action camera
btw, you have some great lightning shots

Based on your shots.... definitely the 810.

But maybe you are looking to add to your style with action shots, and I would rent D500 and see how you feel with it.
You mentioned a number of caveats of not printing, selling, cropping or pro, so the D500 could really suit you, and it opens up new fun areas of photography. Sometimes we get so serious and forget the "fun" factor

This isn't even a contest. I have a D500 and a D810 and for shots like what you have on Flickr, it's D810 all the way. As mentioned above, the D500 is an action camera that's used when you need speed or reach. It can do landscapes, but the D810 does them better.

Plus when it comes to wide angles lenses, there's a lot more in FX than DX.

No brainer, D810 for sure.

I have both D810 and D500, for me if I shoot moving things, D500 with fast FPS and AF otherwise D810 is better. It's depends on what type of subject you are shooting. hence... that's why I have both.

D810 or if you need to spend a little less look for a D800E.

+1

I have a D500 and D750. I love the D500 and use it constantly, but when I need to shoot wide FX rulz.

I don't see why D810 can't be used for sports, I use it as my second body all the time. You just have to know it's limitations. I still think the 810 is the best all-rounder to date.

Tried the d500, didn't like the lack of details in the shadows (not shooting raw since I still use CS6)

I've tried the D810 for Sports. It has no buffer.

Great pictures! I definitely think the D810 would be a better fit for your style photography.

D810 based on the pics on your flickr.

The only reason I'd want a D500 is so I can use smaller DX lenses for travel and cover a lot more range.

You know in 1.2x crop mode the D810 would do fine with those same lens? Which small lens are you speaking of, the 17-55 which is a monster? There are many fine small FF lens, size shouldn't be a deciding factor for you.

Ok. Then D810 it is. Again, I appreciate the insight and responses of everyone. The reason the D500 was on my radar was its awesome reviews. It truly is an amazing camera but in the end, I am a landscape guy. The D500 seems like a perfect fit for you action/wildlife shooters.
