Not sure what I'm seeing here, the best that I can describe is that the in focus edges look like they've been cut and pasted. I see it in the B&W and color image of the climbers, as well as the right shoulder area of the 3rd photo. These were all processed with Aperture and the B&W with Topaz B& W Effects 2. The color images were shot RAW with zero pp.

Hard to tell on images this size but maybe oversharpened?

It's kind of a 3D look, but reminiscent of a mildly crude diorama, especially on the B&W

That's what I thought as well, but they're shot in raw with no sharpening in pp, actually sooc with the color images. I'll recheck the b&w settings

thanks

Check out the third image; looking at the left elbow/arm down to the bottom of the frame juxtaposed with the yellow back ground of the jacket, just seems like a pretty hard edge to me.

A combination of a blown out sky and over-sharpened edges.

You might try lowering the highlights slider in ACR or LR, increasing contrast and brightness to compensate. In photoshop you could also use some masking tricks to constrain these effects to only the brightest tones.

My 2 cents. The 3rd image is shot at 1.6, which isolates it from the background--the yellow jacket. Not a fan of Topez B&W conversions. The 2nd is shot at 3.2 against a bright blue background.
