I was gifted a Tamron 17mm with adaptall stamped Nikon Ai-e. It will not meter on my D700 or 300. I put them in Manual mode and Aperture mode rotated the aperture ring to AE and the viewfinder said I was at 95 not 9.5 but 95. when I rotate it all the way back to 3.5 it reads 16 in the viewfinder. What am I doing wrong here? I would love to have a 17mm for the 700 that worked. Thanks in advance for any info on this.

Did you go into the Non-CPU data and input the specs there? It's only going to give yo a choice of 16 or 18, but you can set the 3.5 there, once you do that, you can adjust the aperture ring on the lens, not the dials on the camera. You can keep up to 9 non-cpu lenses in there.

I have a Tokina 17mm which works fine on the D7000, set up as 16 3.5 on the non cpu menu, also a couple of Tamrons, a 28.2.5 and a 70-210 f/3.8, again they work fine. Are you sure thats Ai-e on the adapter? They would need Ai-s, mine both have N/Ai stamped on them on the face that mates to the camera. Adaptall was around a long time and maybe a pre Ai-s adapter?

Yes mine says AI-e and that did not work either. Oh well, I have a light meter.

Adapters are fairly cheap I think so it would be worth getting one. There is a Tamron resource page on the internet which might help.
17mm is fun, especially on full frame, I used mine regularly om film, for interiors and occasionally for landscapes

Found an adapter at KEH. Hope this does the trick.
