p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which Pelican for Canon gear?

Have a trip coming up that is likely going to demand I check equipment for at least part of the duration. I would like to put all of the gear into one Pelican case if possible. The gear:
1 - 400 f/2.8 IS (not the latest)
1 - 70-200 f/28 IS II
1 - 24-105L f/4
2 - 1DX
1 - 5D3

Is there a Pelican that can be configured with internal dividers that can hold all of this? I could hang the 5D3+24-105 on me if necessary.

I'm sure they make them big enough.

If you go on B&H you can enter the dimensions you need to see what is available.

I have the Pelican 1514 and it holds a 300 2.8 II, 1DX, 70/200 2.8 II, 135mm, 35mm, and flash. I think it should take your listed gear no problem. It is also carryon size but you may get checked for weight.

I have the 1514 too and I am pretty sure it would all fit. The hood on the 400mm will not fit though as the case is not deep enough, so you'd have to carry it on or something? If your going to be checking it you might get the next size up just to be sure and not worry about the hood! Check the weight of the case empty though and then add the weight of your gear. I have a bigger Pelican and cant check it because it easily goes over 50 LBS with gear.

The 1564 with padded dividers looks like it would work? about the size of the 1514 but deeper. Weighs 20 LBS so you could get 30 LBS of gear in there which should be enough.

I think if you lay out everything like you would pack it with room for padded dividers and measure how much room you need then go to pelicans website and see which model you need I think it all will fit in the carry on size pelican

Another possible approach: A 1510 and/or 1560 for everything but the large format lenses, like your 400/2.8. The 400 could get a Lightware 400 model. That's been our approach and it's pretty good.

Leave the hood at home and get an Aquatech folding hood. That should fit.

I've been looking at the new Pelican 1535 which is lighter and can come with padded dividers. It is also a roller. The interior dimensions look like it can accomodate a lot of gear.

Bear in mind that anything larger than a 1510 is not "technically" carry on legal for international flights.

This was my 1510:

As you can see, it fits a 300 2.8 II + 1.4x with the hood ready to shoot, plus the second body with a 70-200 2.8 II on it.

It is worth noting that the diameter of a 400 2.8 IS without hood is 13.7" x 6.4". The 300 2.8 IS II with hood on is approximately 15.5" x 6.0" so I would expect there is a good chance you could just replace where I had my 300 with your 400 (without hood) with the 1DX mounted. Then do something similar with the 70-200 and the two bodies in the bottom half.

Cheers,
Mark

A Pelican 1560 with the padded dividers works. It is my roller case for when I take my 400 vII. It fits with the hood and lens cap on. There is not a lot of spare room height wise.

Some very good input folks, I thank you all. No question the 1560 would do the job, although it comes at a price of weight (18 lbs) and size that makes taking on board doubtful, at least in some instances. I'm currently looking at the new Air version 1535. It's only slightly larger than the 1510 (great photo Mark-thanks) so it appears I can get it all in there with the exception of the 400's hood. I'll take a look into Aquatech's hood option, thanks for the tip John.

Could you reverse the hood or place it over one of the other lenses? I grew up using rubber universal hoods and I prefer the plastic or metal pedal type hoods over the round rubber hoods.

The challenge is I don't think you'll find the 1510 (and likely the same issue with the 1535) can accommodate the diameter of the massive 400 2.8 hood without putting a large amount of pressure on it to get it to close. The 300 2.8 hood alone compresses the foam a fair bit and I believe the 400 2.8 is about an extra inch in diameter.
