p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon D750 - which moderate priced lens?

I just bought a Nikon D750 and have 35mm & 85mm prime lenses. I am looking for a moderately priced mid-range zoom, with good image quality. Which of the following would you recommend:

- Nikon 35-70mm f2.8D
- Nikon 24-85mm or 24-120mm
- Tamron 28-75mm or 24-70mm f2.8
- Sigma 24-70mm f2.8
- Tokina 28-80mm f2.8
- Something else?

I can't pay $1,000+ for a better lens at this time and the above lenses have good reputations. I need to keep the price less than $500.

Which would you buy?

If your budget is that tight, I would be looking at the Nikon 24-120/4 (refurbs for $530 regularly available), or the Sigma/Tamron 24-70/2.8's you already listed.

I've had the 24-102VR F4 since since day one, it's like the swiss army knife of mid range zooms a jack of all trades, not much of a master...it's not the best but it is so damm versatile, and at $530 refurbished, maybe a no brainer. You could also look at the Sigma 24-105 F4 OIS Art, better build, bigger heavier 82mm filter. I'd heard and read that it was better than the Nikon, but I normally go by the eye test. I bought it to use for a month long trip to Italy last year, I found little or nothing between them on my D750, it's a little more $$ but you do have the dock available to calibrate.

I have read some good reviews on the Sigma 24-105 OIS Art lens, so I might see if I can locate a good used one on FM.

There's also the Nikon 28-70 2.8, which seems to go for around $500-ish. I've never owned one, but have heard good things…

24-120 f4
or if your can find one without a squeaky AF motor, a 28-70mm f2.8

I've seen em both locally for $500, was considering the 24-120 due to mostly positive reviews, and I had a 28-70mm in the past that was great. Wouldn't hesitate to get either if I were in that position again as they're probably the best you'll get outside of primes at that pricepoint.

If you are on very tight budget get used Nikon 24-120/4 - decent lens. If you are after image quality save a bit more and get used: Nikon 24-70/2.8G.

I'd go for a used or refurb Nikon 24-120 f/4 for the price point. I'm happy with my copy and highly recommend it. If you want to road test mine you can take a spin up to the Syracuse area and I'll let you try it out on your D750.

Seems like a lot of money to spend for redundant focal lengths. I am without any zooms though, so probably a bit biased.

Great point.
OP, what subjects do you like to shoot?
What do you need that your primes aren't getting you?
Do you just want the zoom for convenience?

If you really need a zoom for $509, then definitely a used Nikon 24-120 (new version). It's dirt cheap

I certainly understand the reasons for using primes. I am just looking for a good quality walking around lens for a variety of subjects, the most important being casual photos of the grandchildren. Sometimes, just one camera and one good lens is all that is necessary.

Tbh I'd stick with the 35mm and 85mm. Loads of wedding photogs use these two for 70% of the day.

Stay well clear. It really struggles with sharpness away from the centre at most zoom lengths and flares even if you just look at it the wrong way.

For your budget, 24-120 F4 is a good choice. But if you can get a chance to try out the 24-85, do it. Heard that it's not bad for the price, a lot of cheap ones were for sales when it came out as a kit lens for the D600/D610. I had the 24-120 f4 to pair with D800 in the past, no love, and I sold it.

At this pricepoint the best lenses are primes. But if you need a zoom for versatility, then you can't go wrong with the 24-120. It's a good lens, but won't wow you like lenses that cost multiple times your budget. A prime can wow you for that price. And if you are capturing foto's of family, then you won't mind being "slowed down" by a prime.
