Hard to say. I expect it's the cumulative result of a combination of factors, mostly based on preference. Regardless, I'm OK with not knowing.

Thanks, Paul. That's exactly my take on it - feels as if it could extend a little more than it does.

I eyed the 200mm f2.8L as a means to get a little more reach on stage. My usual, and favourite, event lens being the 135 f2L.

I do miss my 70-200 f2.8L - it's nuts carrying around 3 primes to cover the range. But at the same time having primes allows me to choose focal length combinations and 'make do'.

I'm using this lens on my 5Dc, 1DSMIII, 7DII and the 1DXII. It really shines on the FF sensors with their large pixelpitch.
I like it much less on the 7DII, where the Bokeh Fringing and Longitudinal Chromatic Aberrations are easier discernible and thus more distracting.
It takes the EF 1.4 MIII converter very well, so you get a good 280mm f4 lens

Thanks very much for your insight. Can you post any examples of the good and the bad?

Did you ever try it with the EF 1.4 II converter? If so, how well did that combination work? TIA.

Never tried the EF 1.4 II. Can't post examples in this forum
Maybe we should communicate via PM

The 135 f/2L with the 1.4 extender gives 189 with excellent results.

It's a good lens, but I replaced it with the much more versatile 70-200mm II with no perceived image quality detriment. IS is absolutely invaluable, and although the 200mm is quite light it takes up about the same amount of space in a bag as the zoom (and you don't get all the other focal lengths). It is a good lens at a good price though.

Folks have inquired how I might use such a lens. Probably in this order:

1. Wide-field astrophotography.
2. Indoor stage or sporting events.
3. Long range portraits in the field.
4. Short-to-moderate distance wildlife.
5. Some general landscape uses.
6. Any instance where I need f/2.8 at native 200mm.

I already have the 70-200mm f/4L IS and I just didn't want to deal with the extra weight of the 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS in instances where I "might" need f/2.8 @ 200mm.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and please provide further experiences if you like!

I was in the same boat as you, but in the end I capitulated and got the f2.8 zoom...

While I currently own no 70-200 lenses, I can easily see the need for having both the f/2.8 and f/4 lenses in the kit...

Trust me, the temptation was there, but the weight was the show-stopper for astro work. The zoom is almost double the weight of this lens.

That, plus I got this one for $485 out the door, including tripod mount.

Is it true that optically the V1 and V2 are the same - the biggest change being the removable hood?

Same glass, same coatings, same electronics, as per white papers and lens charts.

Certainly the zoom is far more versatile than the prime, but there are certain venues (mainly sports) where the larger white zoom would not allowed. I've had the 200mm 2.8 prime at many different sports events which include hockey, basketball, boxing, football and baseball plus non sports performances like concerts, plays and recitals and the prime always gets in without issue.

Yep. Oops. Misunderstanding on my part. I though this comment was about the 70-200/2.8L zooms that were discussed in the previous few posts.

No IS on the lens in question, so not sure what that is all about.

Short answer ... the lens IQ is a good one.

The question becomes size, weight, versatility, IS,etc. regarding your preferences of shooting style.

I use my 100-400 II for my 200-280 range most often. My 200/2.8 II is what I go to when I need faster.

I don't want both the 70-200/2.8 II ... AND ... 100-400 II in my bag. For me, the 200/2.8 II (+TC) complements the long glass.

Sometimes, I imagine the 100-400L IS II is a 200-400mm lens, and then I don't feel so bad about having both of them.

Imagine a new 135L IS that has a built in extender to take it to 190mm 2.8. You just use a switch to go in and out like the 200-400 lens. Would you buy it?

The lens came yesterday and I did a significant amount of general shooting in the field with it today on both the 6D and 7D2 bodies.

It's limitations have been pretty well documented here, but I'm very happy with it ($485 out the door w/tripod collar). I must have received a very good copy; it's plenty sharp. I do miss the IS, but I can work around that for the most part when needed. And that doesn't matter when I'm using it for its primary intended purpose: wide-field astrophotography.

Again, thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread!
