I have read the reviews here and at other sites. Looking for additional perspectives.

Has anyone here shot this lens with the 6D and/or the 7D2 bodies? If so, what are your impressions? TIA.

I own one but shoot with 1Ds3's. It's a nice lens and I use it when shooting sports and places I can't get close positions.

I've had the 200.2.8L for 20 years. It's small, not much bigger than my 16-35f4L. It focuses fast and has good image quality. It works with extenders although the 2x performance is weak IMO. The obvious drawbacks are it lacks IS and doesn't zoom making the 70-200's a more versatile choice. I usually prefer my 70-200 2.8LII but I keep my 200 2.8L as a smaller easily packable option that pairs well with the 24-105L as a travel lens.

I have the mark I. Used it on a 30D for years and recently on a 6D. Love it. Not too big, not screaming 'I am a tele' and sharp. I use it for concerts (perfect!) and wildlife (too short sometimes).

I would suggest the 135mm f/2 over the lens you asked about.

Really, we need to know what you intend to shoot but for portrait & wedding work I'd say the 135 is the better choice, because a 200mm prime has a very specialized application where 135mm is more versatile (in my experience).

I use 200mm a lot more often than 135mm. Just sayin.

The 200mm 2.8 L may be my favorite lens over the years. I also have the 135mm f2, but use the 200mm far more often. I highly recommend it with the 6D as that combination is great for outdoor portraits. It's small, lightweight, black, unobtrusive, very sharp at 2.8 and exhibits beautiful bokeh. What's not to like?

I use my 200 f/2.0 MK II with a 7D MK II and a 1DX MK II. It is a great lens, particularly in low light situations. It is one of the lenses that I use to shoot night football at HS fields that are poorly lit. It allows you to shoot at the same aperture & shutter speed as an f/2.8 lens, but at a much lower ISO.

One of the sharpest lenses I tested on the 5DSR:

I owned the 135mm and the 200 2.8 for many years. Rarely used the 135mm (eventually sold it) but I still use the 200 2.8 on my 6D and 80D: sharp, fast focusing, stealthy black and nimble in hand. The tripod ring from my 300 4L fits it too!

Hi Adam,

Do you have any comments comparing the 200/2.8 L II with 70-200/2.8L IS II ? I've compared your photos, and the prime seems to resolve a bit more detail and be a little "cleaner", but it's difficult to compare them because the subject isn't quite the same.

Thanks,
Jim

OP is asking about the considerably cheaper f/2.8L II, not the amazing but very expensive f/2.0L IS.

Hi Jim, for my copies the prime is uniformly sharp across the frame @ f/4 whereas the zoom @ 200mm never reaches that same level of acuity even when stopped down to f/11.

I recently traded a 7D for an EF 200mm f2.8L (V1), but as of now I haven't had a chance to get it in front anything really worth sharing.

Is it true that optically the V1 and V2 are the same - the biggest change being the removable hood?

From what I have shot it looks promising. For me it also doubles as a '300mm' f4 with the 1.4x Tele - having sold my 300 f4 a couple of years ago.

If I get an opportunity to shoot something over the weekend I'll post some images.

I do have a question about the V1 for the other owners - When extended, how deep is the hood on your copy? From hood edge to filter thread I measure a mere 17mm depth - with a filter attached. And you? Is yours that shallow? Thanks.

Now that's an forgotten gem that's rarely talked about these days. I was torn between the 135L and 200 f/2.8L way back, but after seeing how good the 135L + 1.4x combo worked, I decided I'd lose very little with the 135L and I get a superb f/2 lens and an excellent 189 f/2.8 lens.

I wonder given how good the 70-200L IS II performs if Canon will ever bother to update the prime despite the extra cost an bulk of the zoom. I'd rather they put all their efforts into a 135 f/1.8L IS that was designed also to work almost equally as well with the 1.4x III.

If I may ask, in what specialized application did you use the 200mm f/2.8L II lens?

I'm using this lens on my 5Dc, 1DSMIII, 7DII and the 1DXII. It really shines on the FF sensors with their large pixelpitch.
I like it much less on the 7DII, where the Bokeh Fringing and Longitudinal Chromatic Aberrations are easier discernible and thus more distracting.
It takes the EF 1.4 MIII converter very well, so you get a good 280mm f4 lens

I have not measured mine but I will say when I extend the hood if feels like it should slide out more and has always been that way.
