p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A question about the 5D mark IV

Does the 5D mark IV have Auto ISO?
And the ability to shoot with this "set-up":

With my D810, in good outdoor light, portrait sessions, I just throw her into Aperture mode, f/1.4, set the minimum shutter speed say 1/250th, set ISO to 64, and turn on Auto-ISO. Then I just use exposure-compensation as required.

I am curious if Canon has anything like that?

I shot with and enjoyed a Mark III for a couple years.

Cheers!

Yes it does. There are so many options it is mind boggling.

I don't quite get it yet. Why would you set it to ISO 64 and then after that set it to auto ISO?
And what is your variable that gets adjusted as ambient light levels change? Shutter speed? Is it that shutter speed gets up as ambient light incrreases and ISO gets up if light levels drop and shutter speed gets to 1/250?

I set ISO to the lowest possible setting.
I set the f stop according to what I'm shooting.
the camera has a minimum shutter speed, which I set according to focal length and whether or not my subject is moving around or not.
then the shutter speed will move around a bit, and ISO too.
it works well in good light.
try it out.

I would try it out if I knew exactly what you mean. Probably my bad, sorry.

Edit:
OK I learned something today. I got it sorted out on my 5DsR.

Av mode, f/1.4
Auto ISO: Range from ISO 100 to 1600
Menu "Shoot2" -> ISO speed settings -> set Min. shutter speed to 1/250

Starting very dark: ISO tops at set upper limit and shutter speed is slow: ISO 1600 - 1/10s
More Light: Shutter speed goes up until set min. value: ISO 1600 - 1/250
More Light: ISO goes down to lower set limit: ISO 100 - 1/250
More Light: Shutter speed goes up: ISO 100 - 1/500 etc.
Exposure compensation functional

Meaning you can in fact shoot at your desired "Manually set" f/1.4 and min. 1/250 and let ISO get adjusted as you go. Not much different from Av mode f/1.4 ISO 100 in very good light as it won't hit below 1/250 anyway at f/1.4.

There are two pros I see:
1. If you shoot in moderate light levels this setup will raise ISO instead of motion blur If the photographer doesn't constantly check shutter speed
2. You can use EC while shooting in effective manual mode

The only quirk is that the shutter speed keeps bouncing between 1/250 and 1/320 back and forth as long as ISO is in its auto ISO range. Strange but not harmful.

I will add the ISO speed settings to my custom menu.

Thank you!

Ralph

They are terrible for shooting action - OVF is still superior in that blackout time is minimal.

Fine if your use is more pedestrian - but for quickly moving subjects they can be annoying.

Like Paul says terrible for action.. They still have a ways to go IMHO!

I think the question you really want to ask is if the 5D4 has exposure compension (ie. +1 or -1 EV) in Manual mode when Auto ISO is on.

I can tell you my 5D2 does not. My Nikons do.

So perhaps someone with a 5D4 can answer that.

Yes, the 5DIV does have exposure compensation in Manual Mode when using Auto ISO.
