p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Gitzo GT5542LS vs. GT5543LS

So I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a Gitzo 5 series tripod and had my eye on the GT5542LS however I came across the GT5543LS. From what I have found this is the new replacement for the 5542LS. Looks like it has different style feet and different style "g-lock ultra" I also noticed it says the lags are "carbon eXact" I think "6x" was on the 5542LS anyone have any experience with the newer style?

I have no experience with the Gitzo series 5 carbon fiber tripods, only with the older aluminum series 5. But if you are looking at heavy duty tripods, you should include the Really Right Stuff Series 4 family in your considerations. I am totally happy with my TVC-45 when I need the capacity. My RRS fluid head lives on the it most of the time, but it is a quick change with an RSS lever release to change to a RRS BH-55 ball head or a Wimberley or a telescope tracking head, and those all work great on my TVC-45.

I recently replaced my traveller tripod (someone stole the damn thing when i left it behind in a national park and went back to find it). My new one had the new carbon Exact tubes and new locks.
My impressions the new times are a bit stiffer, and the new locks allow a little more extension.
Overall I think it's a better product than the old one, but not with a ton more money, but if the difference is not huge I'd go with it...

Why do you think you need such a big, heavy tripod as a 5 Series Gitzo? I have the 3542LS and it is quite capable of supporting and locking down my 1dx II, Wimberley gimball head and the Canon 500 f4 ver1 or the 600 II. I've looked at the 5 Series to support a Canon 800mm and concluded that the tripod was too heavy and not necesary. The RRS 4 Series or Gitzo 4 Series is plenty if you need big. Good luck.

I currently have one of Gitzo's 4 series regular tripods and with the legs extended all the way out its just a little to short to be at eye level for me (im about 5'11") I wanted to get one of the "long" series to get a little more height. I do shoot a lot with an 800 so I figured mind as well get a nice set of legs. Also I just looked at the specs and the 5543LS is only 0.84kg heavier than the 3542lS you were referring to. In the grand scheme of things if I am packing around an 800, couple other lenses, two bodies and some extra stuff I don't think 0.84kg in tripod weight is really going to be noticeable. I would rather have a rock solid set of legs.
