p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 28 Hollywood, D28 and ZF25 Test

Hi All
I've got in my current collection Contax 28mm f2 'Hollywood', 28mm f2.8 Distagon (aka D28) and Zeiss Zf 25/2.8, so I decided to try some 'infinity' testing to see if there are any major differences.

All tested on sony A7r, the Contax lenses are on Novoflex C/Y-Nex adapter and the Zeiss Zf on Metabones nik-nex adapter. All focused in the center using focus magnifier.

I have aperture series at f4, 5.6, 8 and 11.

These are the f8 samples, no sharpening has been applied, 100% crops

Obviously the 25 is wider but it's more like 26mm so IMO the comparison with 28mm is valid

Entire scene:

According to datasheets the angle of view of each is:

Contax 28/2.0 - 74
Contax 28/2.8 - 75
Zeiss Zf 25/2.8 - 80

Overall, the 28/2 Hollywood looks best to my eyes at this aperture. Is it any different at the other apertures you tested? I have sort of lusted for this lens for a while but have been put off by its size and weight. Hence, I own the C/Y 28/2.8. Do you find the Hollywood to be cumbersome in actual use?

Hi Rob, the 28/2 is longer and heavier so it feels just a wee bit front heavy.
I do like the close-up performance, it's pretty interesting.

The Zf 25 is a stellar macro performer. Also works in infrared with no hotspotting. Thanks for sharing this interesting test.

Thanks for the info and for posting this test.

Also interesting is that the Contax 28/2.0 and the Zeiss ZF 25/2.8 weigh the same including adapters.

I'll post some f5.6 samples tonight.

Imo, the ZF 25mm looks great. The Contax shot is a few microns less light, so it's not as bright as the others.

The review of the ZF 25mm is underrated, i.e. Photozone but my ZF.2 25mm 2.8 is sharp, corner to corner, so maybe the tester had a bad sample or didn't focus it properly. This keeps used prices low.

Thanks for sharing these!

Very interesting John. To me the Distagon looks slightly better in each sector but most noticeably in the right hand corner. I thought this might be a focussing difference but possibly not as I see it in the Trefoil mouldings on the bridge (even allowing for the different areas in cloud shadow) and the yellow post mark in the river but also the red brick building beyond the bridge.

Thank you, johnahill, for taking the time to compare these classic wides. None of them falls behind and apparantly all offer very good quality. To may eyes the 25 looks best. It would be interesting to see a comparison of the ZF 2.8 25 to the ZE/ZF2 2.0 25 as the first seems to only availble on the used market and only in Nikon mount while the newer one is a stop faster and can be obtained in electronic mount.

Thanks for the tests John. Not a massive difference between them at this aperture. The ZF shades it for me but the C/Y has done amazingly well for the massive price difference (I used to have that lens - now I may have to buy it back again so thanks for nothing) !

Chroma, Distortion ?

Be interesting to see a comparison at other FLs, test subjects (people) ?

You can get the ZF 25 f/2.8 for about $500 these days, and it is a steal at that price, so the price difference is all that huge between it and the CY 28 f/2.8. Both are nice lenses, but I too prefer the ZF in these tests.

I suspect the ZF with it's more modern coatings will be better at handling flare.
I'll test that if and when the sun shines

Which ones of these I will keep might come down more to focal length spacing with my other lenses.

I have the Loxia 21 at 91 AOV, so the 25 (80) may be a little too close

I've had the ZF for a few years and it's the bargain of the Z* line-up, it was left out of the ZE line-up for some reason.

If I remember right, the zf 25 2.8 has quite a bit of field curvature which shows more at closer distances. From what I have seen, the bokeh of the D28 is smoother and nicer IMO than the 25/2.8.
Performance per $ it is hard to beat the 25/2.8!

Mine too!

I have the original 25/2.8 ZF model, same design of elements, but yours has the electrical contacts and exif. I really like it (and the 35/2 ZF.2) on my D800e.
