I am so over how laggy LR is.

Top spec iMac 5k, max Ram, latest version with smart previews — still lags.

I'm seriously considering a custom PC just for editing.

Back when I used pc's, I also found LR lacking in the speed department. Adobe needs to do a serious engine rewrite.

I went from a custom PC to a rMBP. I can pretty much only use Smart Previews on it.

Considering building a hackintosh or offline-only windows machine.

Same machine, same results. I have spent countless hours researching a solution, FM, on the Adobe User to User forums, Apple forums a dedicated LR forum and nothing has totally fixed the issue. I've seen some small improvements. I've checked and unchecked every box in the preferences. I've come to the conclusion that this is an Adobe problem and they have no interest in fixing it.

Meanwhile, the ON1 editor is starting to feel like vaporware. My inbox gets clogged with links to tutorial videos for a product that doesn't exist. Instead on ON1 RAW, it should be ON1 WHEN.

I know one person who upgraded to LR 6.7 (the new version) on PC and saw a major slow down, so I have not upgraded from 6.6 and am still doing just fine

On my iMac the upgrade to 6.7 has helped my speed problems to some degree. In version 6.6 we were getting a lot of spinning beach balls, those seem to have gone away now.

Running fine here. The grid view is slower in 6.7, but the Develop Module is fine. Can't say I spend much time in the grid view though.

What is exactly slow?
I am on a custom PC.

I don't have issue of laggy work.
No issues in develop module.... library is fine.
Exporting does not utilize all of the available system horse power. This could be better.

I do my sorting in photo mechanic though.
I am running Lr 6.7 stand-a-lone.

I have turned sharpening to zero (0). This has helped.

Capture1 is nice but not for large image count work.

I have a custom PC built last year, runs awesome. Zero lag for lightroom
4790k
32 GB RAM
Sabertooth mobo
Windows 7 on ssd
Lr on ssd
All photos and video on two mirrored 3 tb drives. Mirror for redundancy, not speed.
Cost a little over 1000, from what I can remember.
I have no interest in Mac. Sorry.

Can we define lag? I would really love to know what is possible and what your ambitions are.

I know I need to replace my machine, it was badass a few years ago but needs more RAM and more processor. I'm pretty sure LR would make use of both.

My D810 files hurt. Seconds to load and render in Develop. Etc.

What to you guys is lag? Would you expect instantaneous renderings with 40 meg RAW files (standard previews)?... 1 second?... 2 seconds?

I'm probably closer to 6.

If you are not using smart preview .... try making sure the sharpening is turned to zero.
Also verify plenty of space for the cashe.... I am at 40 gig.

I think its soley the 5k imac thats the problem. People running the high res screens are seeing the lag.

Thanks, Mark. I plead uncertainty - is this the setting you're referring to (the Camera Raw Cache Settings)?... and if so, is there any other effect or downside to cranking it up so high?

Well if you are using iMac 5k find the app icon in the applications folder select it and "get info"
After that choose to start the app in low resolution.
Do the same with photo mechanic and both apps will fly.
Moral issue here.too early to have 5k monitors if you are interested in performance

5k iMacs don't have the horsepower that sort of resolution really requires. That is precisely why I'm sticking with my good ol' 2009 Mac Pro for the foreseeable future.
