Most websites for photographers will provide only half the available vertical dimension of the screen for an image as the designer/programmer has created a frame that is at most 3/4 the size of the screen and used 25% or more of the vertical space for menu bars or other control objects.

I was using a website that was created by a photographer and my clients could look at a vertical image and have it take up the entire screen. If they were using a 15 inch laptop the image had a height of 7.5 inches. Think about how dinky vertical images appear when they are only 4 inches tall on a laptop - they are not going to impress anyone.

Look at this smugmug website:

This is typical for photographers who have never been told that you can take a picture with the camera in a portrait orientation whether it is a film or a digital camera. If one only takes horizontal or landscape orientation pictures than smugmug and the rest are going to work reasonably well.

At the other end of the spectrum are photographers like Ian Plant who shoot in portrait orientation when it is a better choice for a subject or scene.

His website software enables the viewer to see an image limited only by the height of the monitor or screen being used.

By the way Ian Plant is using a Photoshelter template so worth a look.
