I've been hesitant in the past to use fill flash, for really no other reason than just a lack of experience/knowledge. Well, I was hired as a second shooter for a short family session with 2 families AND they wanted Senior portraits and engagement pictures. As the sun was setting, I knew I was going to have to use fill flash if I wanted the kind of images I was hoping for so I used it at -1.67 FEC, and with a little PP, I came up with the following two images that I was hoping for feedback on.

Both were shot with the 5D Mark IV, 85L II, and 430 EXII flash. Thanks for any helpful feedback and/or suggestions to improve these images.

#1. Quite good with two exceptions...the family is not looking at you and i don't like what may be dust or out of focus birds in the image.

#2. Nice picture and lighting all around, but you should of tried to put the top of her head under the horizon line since it is that close.

Maybe a little too much flash? They look somewhat flat. But I like the second one; after reading
01Ryan10's comment, I looked again and agree with him.

I think both look fine, except for the dust. I'm quite a bit like you: a flash novice. This thread is useful to me, because, to my eyes, these look quite acceptable. I am interested to see what others think.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Being the second shooter, I didn't get the attention of the family during the group shot!
Also, those are out of focus birds :-) Just clone 'em out, huh?

Looks good! Usually the flash makes the flesh tones too cool. You did a good job of warming them up.

I'm with Doug. I think you did a nice job with the fill. Also agree on getting the head below the horizon, or shooting from a low position and getting the horizon to her waist.
