Still rumored to be coming out in Spring, along with 6D2.

Any guesses on weight & price.

I'm guessing around 5 pounds and $3,000.

Impossible to say. Hopefully it will be an "L" lens, which will impact it's price. It seems strange to me that it wouldn't be an L lens as rumoured.

It will NOT be an "L" lens because it is meant to compete with the Tamron & Sigma 150-600 lenses, and not to compete with the Canon 100-400 II and 200-400 f4 lenses.

IMO

All the rumors on the Canon Rumors site seem to indicate that it will NOT be an "L" lens, and directly compete with the Tamron and Sigma zooms. Frankly, if Canon can give us the same or better IQ than the "reasonably priced" Nikon 200-500, I think Canon will sell a ton of them. I'd buy one in a heart-beat!

My guess is you will never see such a lens.

I'd be interested to see what is offered, but currently the 100-400 II is hard to beat. At 400mm, even with heavy crops, it is a better option for me than the 400 5.6 prime with no IS feature either.

I rented the Tamron 150-600 for several trips to Yellowstone, but the 100-400 ii seems to out resolve it cropped in to 600 equivalent.

Sure, but the Canon 100-400 II & TC gives you 560mm at f8. The 200-600 would give you 600mm at f5.6.

The Tamron is not f5.6 and is not a Canon.

Sure Canon needs an answer to Nikon's 200-500 zoom and they need to 'one-up-it' otherwise they are just catching up rather than leading.
Don't get me wrong, the Big White Tele's are amazing but Canon and Nikon were letting Sigma and Tamron steal a whole lot of business over the last few years IMO.

Biggest advantage in my thoughts is the direct compatibility on eliminating any focusing issues. I'd prefer to have a Canon on Canon and a Nikon on a Nikon under most circumstances for total compatibility.

Let's see, the Nikon sells for $1400 with USA warranty, the Canon should sell for around $1800-2100 IMO to be competitive and that is a stretch on price. Ideally selling for $1500-1800 makes sense. Retail can be anything they want, that is all hype, I don't by at retail.
Weight 4.62lbs

I look forward to the 6DII so I can buy a nice used 6D at a lower price

I would think $2k or less to compete with sigma and tamron. I suspect that many Canon shooters would pay a little more for Canon glass but not too much more. I bet they will be competitive weight wise also with the tamron and sigma contemporary.

A photographer in Alaska had one. He was running a workshop for bears and also owned a camera store. I looked at a magnified image on his camera's LCD. It was sharp. He said it would sell for the low $2000's to compete with the Tamron and Sigma offerings, for what that's worth. He was telling me to sell my 800 because the lens was so good my 800's value would plummet when the lens became available to the public. I'm keeping my 800.

For real??

Anyways....some thoughts....we saw a patent for a 200-600 f/5.6. Anyone with any reason would have deduced from that patent that the lens would be over 10K because it was internal focusing. So that patent isn't this Tam/Sig competitor. But that doesn't matter, they still could be making this lens.

I own the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6. It is already a very substantially heavy lens compared to the 100-400II. It is bulky to pack and its weight when extended is worse than handholding a 400DOII because of how long it is when extended.

The Canon at 600 f/5.6 would have a min front element of 107mm where the Nikon has 89mm element approximately. So already we are talking about a much bigger front end and therefore even heavier than the Nikon. The Sigma and Tamron at 600 f/6.3 are 95mm which is still a lot smaller than a 107mm lens.

Bottom line is this lens will not be as practical as the Nikon or Sig/Tam (of course it would have an extra 100mm over the Nikon and 1/3 light over the Sig/Tam).

If Canon is able to make such a lens it isn't going to be exactly what people are thinking. It will be a bit more of a beast to wield then people used to 100-400 and 150-600 lenses are used to.

I hope Canon does come out with something special but I'm not holding my breathe and my money is being stashed for the 600DO so don't know if this lens will enter my arsenal.

This would be, perhaps, a great application for a DO lens. If it could use the advanced technology present in the 400/4, it could be a fairly compact lens, lighter than its contemporaries. But it would still require the large diameter entrance pupil.
