I have wanted to try this lens for about 15 years but never had the opportunity. Found a new-ish one on Ebay for a decent price, so...I'll let you know. I've always heard good things about it. I'll be comparing it to a 300 f4 AFS, and 200-500VR; we'll see how it goes. I've always liked the idea of 400 5.6, and love the 300 AFS f4 for closeup stuff. If it's close to either one of the others I'll be ecstatic! Might be my new kayaking lens although supplanting the 200-500 is going to take some doing. That lens continues to blow me away!
Anyway...D300, D7200, and D750 will be the bodies.

I have the apo macro version, sadly it's ruined by fungus. But it was optically quite decent with a warm cast. No Nikkor, but a bargain. And with a solid build.

I have this lens and would rate it as excellent optically. It is a D-type lens and focus is not as quick as AFS types. It is a real "sleeper" and unless it is out of alignment or something, I am pretty sure you will be pleased.

I also had the APO macro version for a while, and it didn't impress me much. I found it to be less sharp than a cropped image from my 70-200 at 200mm.

I guess I should clarify (for anyone without experience that might stumble into the thread) that there are three versions...
non-APO
APO
Telemacro
The latter is the only one that I've ever seen described as a stand-out.

I think you mean apo macro, not telemacro, and as you say it is easily the best.

This one is actually called "Telemacro." If you Google it...you'll see what I mean.

In which case there are four versions. See here:

http://www.photozone.de/reviews/306-sigma-af-400mm-f56-hsm-apo-macro-test-report--review

To my surprise mine is marked telemacro on the barrel. I suspect apo macro and telemacro versions have the same optics, but that is a guess.

They're really easy to spot...they have that huge focusing ring that you see in that picture on .de.
I know about the apo, and apo macro...which was the fourth?

Just a FYI, this lens may not work on your newer bodies since it's a older lens. But it should work fine on the D300.

My older AFD lenses work fine, so fingers crossed. I really don't even care if af and metering work. If it stops down, I can handle the rest.

If those AFD's are Nikon then that's fine and will work no problem, it's just old 3rd party lenses sometimes will not work on newer bodies and would have to be rechipped by Sigma.

You listed three: non-APO, APO, telemacro. The fourth is APO Macro. Look at the one on photozone, you see it is marked APO macro, whereas yours is marked telemacro.

Incidentally, the photo on this page was taken with the telemacro version:

http://www.leifgoodwin.co.uk/Dragonflies/_DSC4275%20Male%20Hairy%20Dragonfly.html

Not as sharp and contrasty as my Nikon 200mm F4 AFD micro, but pretty good IMO.

Nope...perhaps I was unclear..."Telemacro APO" is the lens to which I'm referring. I'm not aware of a Telemacro non-APO. There was also a 300f4 TMacAPO, which the .de review mentions. I've heard that one is also good.
In any case...I've been wanting to try it...and I'm going to have a chance. Happy to give my impressions after I get some time with it.

That is a nice shot! I wish I still had my 200Micro AFD; that's the finest image quality I've ever experienced. Maybe add that back someday. Using a 150HSM currently...not too shabby either.
Love your site...I may see if I can use it for my ID's. I'm a bio teacher/former marine biologist-envir. chemist, and I don't have the expertise in fungi ID. I'm sure I have mis-ID'ed several on my site.

The 300 f4 macro is indeed really good. I have one but one adapter screwed up the mount and now it does not AF nor AE. .

The only problem with these lenses is that they are some times on the limit of AF micro-adjustment. Mine needed -20 and when I manual focused the pictures were sharper.
