Are there any DX lenses that you'd be willing to use on a FF body?

I just tried the 35 1.8 DX and the vignetting was not as bad as I expected. Combined with the light weight and sharpness, I'm considering staying with it instead of getting the FF version.

Sigma 50-100 f1.8 A...insanely sharp on my D810/800 in 1.2 mode.
That DX 35 sucks. Distortion, CA, AF, trust me...crap on = crap out.

For me personally, none. The trade offs are too severe (for my tastes) and there are enough cheap full frame lenses that are outstanding.

Around F5.6 or smaller and especially at longer distances, you start to get hard vignetting that is pretty much uncorrectable on the 35/1.8. Even the vignetting at F1.8 if uncorrected is quite bad (In my opinion). Close up subjects and wide apertures are less of an issue.

The Tokina 11-16/2.8 also works on full frame at 16mm, but the corner performance is pretty terrible and obviously that's quite limiting for a zoom.

You'll have more luck in 1.2 or (obviously) 1.5 crop mode with some lenses, but you're starting to defeat the purpose assuming you are looking for full-frame compatibility.

Yes, better to go the other way.

I briefly tried a Nikkor 12-24/4 DX, pre-owned lens, on a D700, to get a quick idea of whether I should consider buying it as a gift for someone to use on a D7000. In the 16-24mm range, with the D700 not set to recognize a DX lens, it seemed quite nice. On a seriously tight budget, I might consider this DX lens on FX, but my heart was set on a 14-24/2.8G, so I did not seriously consider this 12-24/4 for myself, though I did entertain the thought for while, and found some quite good landscape images on-line, shot at 16mm, with the 12-24/4 on FX cameras. (About a year later, I did get my 14-24/2.8G.)

I did try a Nikkor 35/1.8 DX on a D700, and, well, it was decent, though not remarkably good. I had read that vignetting was not bad, on FX, and that part I found to be correct. As with the above-mentioned 12-24/4 DX, I was testing a pre-owned sample, to get a quick idea whether to buy it for a DX shooter. I think I already owned my Nikkor 35/2D at the time, so had no reason to consider a 35/1.8 DX for my personal use.

Thanks for posting this. This is the second anecdote I have found, in the recent past, regarding this lens on sensors larger than DX. The other was regarding this lens on 1.3X-crop Canons, which caught my attention because I still find my 1D Mark II N cameras useful, in good light.

Wow! 100 1.8 Interesting lens. Weighs and cost as much as a 70-200 2.8 DOF would be similar to a 2.8 lens (on crop body) And amazing on a FF body if you could get a slightly wider field of view. I'd probably rather just grab an 85 1.8 and use it on either FF or crop body. Mainly for the weight, but cost would factor in as well.

Certainly not the lens to buy just for FX, but if you have both DX & FX then it is a pretty compelling bonus to be able to shoot it as a 60-120mm FOV and 25MP image on the D8x0 bodies.

I used the 10.5mm for years on a D700 and D800. I shaved the hood off and it was one of the best lenses I had. It gave tons of creative options and it was wonderfully sharp.

This is likely the best DX lens and a FF body.

Only reason I am not using it now is because mine shattered due to high wind blowing my tripod over and the glass taking the whole hit.

I shoot DX on FX body if I want wider and don't mind the vignette (or can crop it down). While the optical circle may cover FX, the image quality out there may be lousy. Lens, aperture, distance and your tolerance for optical decay are all usage factors. The big exception I know and exploit is the 55-200/4-5.6 non-VR: this sucker has quality FX performance across all settings. Amazing for an $80 refurb kit zoom. The VR version is still excellent, but lost that FX magic.

When I initially started toying with fisheyes, I purchased a Rokinon/Samyang/Bower/Opteka (not sure which one I got, but it was a good sale, I want to say around $150) and enjoy it's performance. The version I had came with a removable hood so that you could sorta get a round fisheye shot on FX. I found it pretty sharp.

I bought the 80-400 for use on my D7100 and loved it. Now I only have the D500 and D810. All of my future lens purchases will be FF lenses and I'll use them on my D500. I can't see buying lenses that restrict me to being used on one camera only.

Even back with I only had a cropped sensor camera, all my purchases were FX lenses. This gave me more options to go to FX in the future.

But I won't use a DX lens on my FF camera unless I simply don't have anything else available. And then, it's usually better to just put it on my DX camera. Too much to loose by putting a DX lens on FF.

Try the Tokina 11-20mm F2.8. Good from 17-20mm.

I have used and still own the 12-24 on FX. I use it from 18mm onwards without much issue., the vignetting is taken care by Lightroom and results are great. I have also used the 35mm f1.8 but thats not a focal length I like on FX.
